I have located on my favorite fishing hole a rock reef that comes up to the waters edge in (almost) the middle of the lower manitou. It is probalbly a 1/2 mile to shore and it drops off pretty quick to 10-25 feet , not much a apron or ridge that runs off in any direction . About 100 yards from it is another hump that comes up from 25 ft to 14 feet . Most of the water surrounding this area is from 25 to 120 feet deep. There is no other structure around this spot so do you think it is a real find , or too isolated to be a hot spot. It may be more like a mile from shore , hard to judge distance across open water. We have charted baitfish around it everytime we have checked it out , but no sightings yet. Should we keep hitting it ??? Thanks ManitouDan

ManitouDan,

Keep hitting it. Isolated rock reef and a rock hump nearby !!!
Sweet-fish the tops/edge during low-light. Fish the 'swale' between
the two humps/reefs during the day and the deeper water around the
structure. Fish it when wind blown and wave hammered.
If it has consistant baitfish - the largerfish and predators
will be there too. The Musky will be waiting to eat them all.
You would be guilty of negligence if you do not fish it anytime
your in the area or on that body of water - Penalty, sending Mother
a list of your baits for me to chose from and confiscate a few as
your punishment ;)

In the biz, we call that a G spot.

Even if it's deep and narrow, anything with some length that runs into shore usually holds fish. The difficulty with the ridge is depth and length and the fact that places like this usually have some key holds along them where fish tend to lay up and be, maybe a dogleg, a sunk tree or section of boulders. You might have to locate specific holding areas before finding your fish. The hump sounds like a winner if it has a reasonable amount of foraging area on the top. You may need a high activity day to show you the way on these two but my vote would be to keep fishing them, and try them in the fall.

You forgot to mention the size of the hump, bigger seems much better! In such lonely type structures,I feel it most important to fish the deep suspendo`s around the whole peice before venturing onto it and most of the time one very small out-cropping or something alittle different will be the consistant area most of the time and the wind also plays a big role here, gale force has been my best fishing on these type areas.Just one man`s opinion on one way to check it out.I would really start checking this area alot as summer turns to fall!Good luck! You forgot to list the GPS coordinates so we could help you find out if it is really really good or just another spot. Post em here and we promise not to tell anybody else!;)

You're right Handyman. Dan just e mail us the GPSc's, no point in posting them on the board. I'll bring my big boat and Handyman and I will take care of checking it out for you.

This sounds very similar to a very good spot I fish in Canada. No GPS coordinates will be given for my spot either :). Fish it very hard under a variety of conditions, make sure you check the open water around and between the two reefs for suspended fish, and don't give up on it. The spot I'm thinking is like yours -- I fished it every trip up there for 3 years before I got a fish, but since then I have 2 45" fish from it, plus a couple smaller ones. Fish it hard, good luck.

Manitou Dan, you have found what I refer to as a Gold Mine. Mother gave some really great advice about fishing that type of structure. Wind is really key to success on those types of reefs. I fished a structure like that recently on Vermilion and found the fish to position themselves on the front part of the windblown edge. Both fish I caught (in the same area BTW) were suspending over the deep water just waiting to ambush something. Turned out to be my slam'er thunderhead. Two fish in the same area 10 minutes apart! These types of reefs seem to produce best during mid-summer, and up until fall. Not spring areas. Have fun fishing your reef, and strap on a topwater that makes lots of noise in the wind. Don't forget to hang on!!! Cast-n-blast
