About a month ago, I discussed an article that talked about adding an additional hook to the mid section of a bucktail just below the blade. This interested me because I missed an awful number of hard strikes on single hook spinners over the past two years. Well, I finally got a chance to try it on some active fish and I am happy to say that it worked (so far). I landed three fish out of three strikes all in about an hour. All of them were hooked on the newly added treble and two were hooked on the new hook only. I used a split ring to add the hooks, but I think that building it into the spinner with a clevis would work better.

Apparently the idea of the add-on treble isn't a new one. I recently picked up a wad (and I do mean a tangled up wad) of old muskie baits from a friend for $50.00. He had picked it up for me at a fishing show. I got 8 Lou Eppinger Huskie Devils, a couple of Homer LeBlanc Swim Zags, two of the old muskie size RedEye Wobblers, several old wood Pikie Minnows and a handful of inline bucktail spinners. Three of the bucktails had the add-on trebles(#1/0), attached with a split ring ahead of the main treble (#3/0). I don't have a clue who made them; they had the wide fluted willow leaf blades and natural deer hair (which needs to be replaced). I assume that whoever owned the stuff originally was a serious muskie fisherman and must have trusted the add-on hook. I think your notion of using a clevis has merit, I don't know why it wouldn't work as well or better as the split ring, except that, if you had to cut off a hook to release a fish, it would be easier to replace on a split ring.

Good fishing,
