Im going to be trolling on Saturday on a shallow flowage full of stumps and flooded timber. The water color is moderately stained.

I have never trolled this lake before but I heard it can be a bit hazordous. It shouldnt be a navigation nightmare but I am an un-experienced troller and am looking for some insight on what type of baits to use and what color. I dont want to spend the day pulling baits out of stumps and possibly snapping a pole in half.

I was thinking of using big spinnerbaits since they are weedless but would like to throw out a bulldog or a spoon if possible.

What kind of baits do you guys/girls use to troll flooded timber?
Also how far back do you typically let a bait out behind the boat?

Any advice is much appreciated.

I would troll mostly white or yellow large spinnerbaits 2 to 4 mph with about 15 to 30 ft of line out. Keep it short, and keep the baits high in the water. If you can afford to keep your rod elevated, this should help as well. Doing this should lessen your chances of getting caught. If the water depth is 5 to 15 feet of water I think you'll be fine. If the water is deeper - let out more line.

go get'em

Hummmm.. Sounds like the Gile Flowage to me! Is that where you are going? Some big fish in there. Some big ole snags and rocks too. Watch that depthfinder!
