Nets and Split Fins

I am interested in knowing how serious the fish are hurt when they are landed using a traditional net that causes split fins and tails.

Does this have a lasting effect on the fish or do the damaged parts somehow rejoin?


I know it's called fishing, but catching one would be nice!

Judging from fish I have observed in aquariums, I'd say that damaged fins and tails will eventually heal but it takes quite a long time. And that's providing that the damaged areas do not become infected due to bacteria. Aquarium takns are usually medicated or contain fairly high amounts of salt. In the final analysis, it's better for anglers to use knottless, rubberized treated net bags which go a long ways towards lessening fin and tail damage to the fish.
