you can't buy suckers in my area so I'm forced to try to catch a couple, any ideas on bait or typical spots on a river?

try trolling for them with a mepps 0, be careful not to go too fast.
the best speed I have found is .5 mph
good luck

Use gobs of nightcrawlers in riffle areas or downstream from riffles, or to the edge, or somewhere in the vacinity of riffle area. Let the gob of nightcrawlers sit on the bottom till you get a pickup. We keep bait in a 100 gallon stock tank and find that we can catch suckers waaay bigger than anything you can buy. We have found that wild caught bait is hardier and reacts differently than store bought. I am fairly sure that some of the suckers we catch are illegal to use in Minnesota. In Mn, you can't fish with a fish, which is what they call "really big baits." If I remember correctly, if you catch your own, it does not matter. Anyways... once you find a good spot, it will almost always be a good sport. Use light line and you will find that catching suckers is a ton o fun.
Don't be afraid to use really big suckers. I would not be afraid of using 2-4 pounders.... big bait=big fish.
