I am mostly a weekend fisherman, and always try and get out as early as possible on Saturday - often 4am or a bit later. Next weekend Saturday fishing is not an option for me - only Sunday. I was wondering if your log books or memories show that typically you do better on a Sat or a Sunday?

My thought has always been that the lake has sat mostly unused during the week, and that by Saturday am fish have returned to almost normal daily patterns. But by Sunday the lakes is so stirred up by boats, jetskiis etc... that fish are taking refuge in the weeds, boulders etc... They at least a bit more spooked, and less likely to strike...

But perhaps the fish are better a bit stirred up? Perhaps the baitfish are stirred up also? Perhaps they are more ready to strike...???

Your thoughts, or preferences?

Randy:

I have always operated under the belief that it takes more than a few days to really get the fish stirred up and so it also takes longer than that to have them settle back down. There is certainly less lake traffic now than there was a few weeks back, but compared to the turmoil most lakes receive from Memorial Day thru Labor Day and beyond I doubt that reduced lake use itself has really altered their patterns all that much as yet. For this reason, I would not expect to see much difference between Saturday and Sunday (one day to the other) with regard to fish activity strictly due to which day. I would be more inclined to think weather patterns, solar and lunar periods, lake turnover, etc. have more affect on fish movement and attempt to hit the water during peak periods whether Sat or Sun. If I couldn't get out on a Saturday but could on a Sunday or vice versa, well then that's when I would be there and adjust my techniques and presentations accordingly. Like you, I really like the early mornings - but you'll find me on the water in the evenings too and the period in between when conditions seem to warrant. With cooling water temps and lessened sunlight intensity, the lower light periods are becoming somewhat less important and should continue to move in that direction, IMO anyway. These are just my personal opinions and past seasons and successes seem to bear this out, of course I could be wrong. See what others have to say on the subject.
