Can someone give me any advice on tying bucktail to a coil? I like the neat package it results in but, my vise is crunching the coil..... HELP!!!

blk2brvo,

I used to tie to the coil and I used a small nail clamped in the vise. It has to be small enough to just fit inside the coil. Rough it up a bit with a file and the coil will not roll on the nail. You can then pull the coil straight off and reposition for another tie if your vise does not rotate.

I took apart an old drill and used the chuck, mounted the chuck on a 2x4 and then put one end of the coil in the chuck and tighten, works great.

I use a small, round tapered file that was squared on the smooth end. I clamp the square end in the vise and put the coil on the round end of the file. It can't turn on its own, but you can easily move it around when you need to check out the backside.
