My boat has two trolling motor batteries and four wires to the trolling motor plug receptacle. Two positive and two negative. My 24v trolling motor plug has 4 prongs of which one positive and one negative are jumpered together to provide 24 volts to the motor. My onboard charger charges each battery seperately. Do I have to unplug my trolling motor before I plug in the charger? Can I damage my charger or trolling motor if I don't. The charger is a Charge Pro.
Thanks Herky
Depends.
It depends on how the charger is wired.
Many on board chargers take care of the 2-battery jumpering internally - so there is no need, nor desire to jumper the terminals externally.
To be safe, it is always a good idea to disconnect the trolling battery while charging.
Take care

Thanks REW for the reply, but I'm not sure if I follow what you were saying. My charger is a two bank and charges each battery seperately. I'm mostly concerned with forgetting to unplug the trolling motor when I charge thus the batteries are connected 24v through the plug. Actually I do have a second (bow) trolling motor which is 12v-24v with a toggle switch instead of the plug being jumpered. Does this create any new concerns. I know I should unplug the motors to be on the safe side but it would be nice to leave them plugged in all the time.
Thanks Herky

Why take the chance of a power surge and feedback to your trolling motor while charging. Just get in the habit of unplugging the motor. Why take the chance?

Herky,
Sorry I didn't pick up on your question sooner. As long as your charger is not a model 2610, you can leave your trolling motor plugged in while charging. The charger will not see the 24 volt connection and there will be no harm done. If your charger is a model 2611, you might want to keep an eye on the lights as some trolling motors will draw a small amount of current, even in the off position, which will increase your charge time. And, as always, you can give me a call toll free here at Guest at 1-888-483-7865 extension 135 and I would be happy to help you out.
Tight lines and full livewells!
