Can you motor troll with the Yamaha 150 HPDI without loading up& fouling plugs? I really like the 140 Suzuki/Johnson 4 stroke but want the performance of a V6 ....Ranger 618vs

definitly go with the 4 stroke. i have a yamaha 115 on a skeeter 1775 and it trolls like a charm. i cant imagine a 2 stroke running that slow. i have heard merc makes a motor called a 2+2 which is a 4 cylinder that runs on 2 while at slow spees so you can troll. iw ould go with the 4 stroke though.

Hi
What type of boat are you buying?
What type of trolling do you plan to do?
I have done a tremendous amout of research on this topic.

I own a Yamaha,115 HP, 4-st on an Alum 175 Tour Pro
Plus a 9.9 HP, 4-st kicker
Top speed = 40 mph
Trolls about 2 or 2.5 mph using the 115 Yamaha
Trolls about .5 mph using the 9.9

Plus, I can troll with my 9.9 or 115 "locked" forward and my Pinpoint on depth track. This way I have an "assist" from the gas motors and I don't burn down my batteries. I can run all day from 1 to 4 MPH on depth track.

This set up can be applied to almost any boat.
Just some thoughts
Thx
Jer

The bottom line is two stroke motors are just not tuned and desingned to run at idle speed all day if you go with a two stroke you will need a kicker wich is ok but you will have to connect it to the main motor for steering if you have a consol boat and your controls for the trottle won`t be up front. It is possible you may be able to get a two stroke motor and a two stroke 9.9 like i use for trolling and still pay less and still be lighter about 75lbs. for the kicker. This gives you two motors in case of breakdown. That said i would go with the four stroke If your into performace get into boat racing this is fishing. I mean you don`t think the same five bass pros wouldn`t still all finish top five if you gave them all 50 less horsepower than the rest of the feild? I love the guys who ask how fast does my boat go I`m not a boat racer. What ever happend too how big a fish did you catch. I don`t mean to bust chops but 8 hours of frustration while trolling ain`t worth an extra 4mph. Pluss your two stroke prolly won`t be much faster with fowled plugs.

If you want to go fast and still troll at 1 mph and have $15,000 (motor only) to throw away look at the new Honda 225 4 strokes 70+mph on a 21 footer

It still won`t troll down to 1mph props too big. Even at idle speed you`ll prolly still be going 3mph.

Musky3 go with a 4 stroke I have had a Honda 130hp 4 stroke for 3 years now and love it. IT is on a Chaparral 198F the boat is fiberglass and runs over 40mph with 2 people on board and 56gal of gas plus all my gear and I get a little over 1 1/2 hours per gallon trolling. Both Hondas 130hp and Yamahas 115hp are around $9000 and are 4 cylinders. They both make 230hp now and are 6 cylinders with a cost over $16000 with all the goodies. You would be surprised how slow you can go when you use the power trim control. At idle speed you can change the speed by as much as 3mph. I do this now when I need to slow down or speed up a little. I run a Honda 130 HP & would now never own a 2 stroke. But you may want to read an article I ran into today by Yamaha at a site www.fishingworld.com. I didn't read it all as I am not looking for a moter but for someone in the market it should be interesting.

Regarding the Suzu DF140, I've got one on my Tuffy Osprey 1990 and she trolls down to 1.8 MPH and is so quiet you don't know its running. Fuel economy is great as well, I estimate I averaged over 5 MPG on my last 50 gallons of fuel.

Hey esoxross How heavy is your Tuffy 1990 and what is your top speed (GPS)with your 140 suz Thanks

Musky3 - The 1990 is a big boat and heavy. It's 1900 pounds (boat and motor)unloaded. With an average fuel load, all gear, and a passenger, I figure Im at 2800# +. I run 40 - 40.5 MPH (GPS speed) with that load and I'm still fine tuniing the prop. I figure should be able to get the baot to to 42-43 MPH loaded. It's no speed demon, but that wasnt crucial for me and I didn't want to have a kicker for trolling and I wanted the all the major advantages of the Suzu 4 stroke.
