Heading to mid Lac Seul for an early June Walleye trip. Feeling I should take one day and make the trip to Chamberlin and the famous Northeast muskie grounds. I'm thinking small baits, shallow and slow. But it is too early in the year to even mess around with mr. muskie? Even if its not primetime, I'd still really like to give it a go. Good or bad idea?

What date in early June? Is Ontario open at that time? I thought it opened for muskie around the 3rd weekend of June? I'm not sure...

2nd week. Was almost certain the season was not open that early in Ontario and Lac Seul. The lads at Mahkwa say its OK to go at it that early, maybe due to all catch and release? Checked the MNR website and still confused.

Season opens the 3rd Sat in June. June 21st.
Intentionally fishing for muskies before then is illegal and in my opion unethical. I personally know of someone who was fishing for them early and lost his rod, reel, all his baits, and got a hefty fine to boot. Not worth it if you ask me.

Not interested in doing anything ilegal. Just curious about when the Lac Seul muskie season really opens and maybe getting a bit of advice on early season techniques.

As another post indicated the opener is the third saturday in June. The 21st this year. Fishing for muskies before that date is illegal.

It is very possible that muskies would still be spawning in early June and should not be disturbed. Particularly in a natural fishery like Lac Seul.

Here is a link to the Ontario MNR site with the regulations. Looks like Lac Seul is Div 30.

I'll leave the muskie baits at home. It's a walleye trip anyway. Should have known better, just got excited when the lodge guys said it was OK. I'll contact the camp and encourage them to change the info on their web page.

It is hard to tell someone not to fish early when you have one of the field editors of MH telling how he watched "the dark shadow" come up and get his perch when panfishing during the preseason, not once but twice it happened. People always want other people to have ethical values it seems.
