I am going to the NWT in search of pike in the 30 to 40 lb. range. The water will be very clear and I need something castable and very strong. Should I go with mono or a braid ? Will be using musky rods and bait cast reels. What lb. test would you use? What color? Any input would be appreciated. Thank You. Best Fishes!

I'd go with superbraid between 40 - 65 lb test. Color probably isn't too much of an issue.

I went up to Lake Athabasca. I used 50lb Tuffline (White/black spot) for trophy northerns and gigantic lakers.

Also, we caught 2 northerns (42" and 48.5") with #1 Blue fox spinners fishing for greyling on 6 lb test.

My favorite line for big fish and great casting is 50 lb spider wire
premium braid. It is noticably good for casting and it is not
big and bulky like many braided lines. I believe it has a 10 lb diamiter. Give er a try.

I would go with 65 lb. PowerPro line (similar diameter to 16 lb. test mono). If you are concerned about visibility, you can use a 60 lb. fluorocarbon leader attached with a blood knot or a double surgeons knot to the PowerPro. The knot when tied properly will pass through the eyes of the rod without a problem. If you need info on how to tie these knots: www.eangler.com/knots

80 pound Whiplash if you can find it.

Otherwise I would go with 65# Spiderwire Stealth

May I add a related question? What's the real word on the new Spiderwire Stealth? Field & Stream says it's rounder (less carving into guides) and teflon coated (less H2O absorbed.) Is it so new that nobody has had a chance to use it other than the Spiderwire crew?

I talked to Lance Christensen from Pure Fishing at the poolside demo the other night and he said Stealth is Whiplash with Teflon impregnated in it to make it totally water-proof. He also recommended using 100 lb (20 lb diameter) for most Muskie baits. So, Stealth is an improved Whiplash.

Hope this helps.

I spooled up my crankbait rod a few weeks ago with 100# Spiderwire stealth. It looks beefy. I think pound for pound it might be a little bit stronger. I havent fished with it yet however.

Is this the start of another tuf-line vs. power pro debate? HA! I've been waiting to hear more opinions on line to loosen some of the BS floating around other topics. I'll give my humble opinion. I have used tuf-line 80 lb. for about 5 years and have had great success with it in all situations. It seems to last a long time, but can have a tendency to hold water and get you wet a bit. But, that doesn't seem to slow me down any. IMHO! Have fun! Cast-n-blast
