I'm looking for some feedback on All Star's Muskie blanks. How do they perform? How do they compare with Loomis and St. Croix (the only Muskie rods I've fished). And specifically, I'm looking at an IM10X, B847MS (7', 20-80 line, 1-4 lure) for cranking Jakes. Any thoughts on that blank/bait relationship? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Matt,

Give a call to Thorne Bros. I built a rod on All Star's flippin stik blank and use the factory made 6'10" and 8 foot rods. I do like the rods alot, but I do not cast Jakes, so cona't help you out there. I suspect if you talk to the guy that builds the rods at Thornes, that he will be able to compare and contrast the blanks that you have used with the All Star blank.

Matt,
First off just pick up an All Star rod for your self and see how light it is. Next compair the extra's that are standard, such as the over sized 10" rear cork grips and the 5" fore cork grips. Plus a limited lifetime warranty and a price thats not going to break the bank.
The BGS847 is an awsome rod, however your question was in regards to tossing Jakes. My question is big, med or small? If your answer is small and med then yes the rod will perform perfectly. If you are tossing 10" Jakes then NO! Get the right tool to do the job. The BGS847 is a great rod for Bootails and top water.

I would recomend the BGS76XH rod for the bigger baits. This is a great rod for working 10" Jakes / Grandmas and Bull Dogs.

If it's a 7' rod that you want to stay with then the other option is the BGS70XH both the BGS847 are 7'rods.

Check out WWW.allstarrods.com and go to Big Game Series.(BGS)

Tom

Thanks for the input. Good points. Actually this is going to be a custom rod I'm doing for a guy. Jakes are his favorite bait, always has one on. I've only thrown Jakes a couple of times and that's why I needed a little input. I don't feel that I have quite enough knowledge on the bait. I'll have to ask him what sizes he prefers. Glad to know I hit a good blank if the bait size is right!

Just a follow up.

I was having a hard time relating Tom's rod recomendations to available blanks so I emailed All Star. I got a reply within a half an hour! I've copied it and pasted below for anyone that is interested. Thanks again guys.

Good Morning Matt,
The BGS70XH is made from the blank BGSW848. The BGS76XH is made from
BGSW908 which has been discontinued due to lack of sales. They are both
very nice blanks and I'm sure that they would work for your purpose but I
would probably recommend the B828MM-IM10X which is specifically designed for
musky.
Feel free to contact me with any additional comments or questions.
