View Full Version : Dock Knot
Windblown

While fishing in Canada, I noticed that a few boats tied to the dock with a long (2 foot) chain type of knot. The rope was initially loop around the pier post, but the rest of the knot was tied around the rope, not the post. This slick knot became tighter as the boat pulled on the main line, but a small tug on the end portion release the knot instantly. Can anyone tell me what this knot is called, and how it's tied? I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks Tim. That's an interesting website, but that's not the knot. The mystery knot I'm talking about seemed to repeat itself about 7 or 8 times and released with a quick tug on the tail end. The last time I saw it used was on Eagle Lake by a guest at Andy Myers.

I know the knot your talking about. You can make it 2 ft. long if you had enough rope and it's fun to take apart too. I can do it but it's hard to explain by words. I'll try and find a picture with an explanation.

I don't know what the knot is called but will try and tell you how to do it,it really isn't hard to do.
Put the loop end of your rope on the cleat then put the other end through the ring on the dock and make a small loop then take the line and pull it through the loop you just made and keep doing this till you get as many knots that you want.

I think the knot you may be talking about is a multiple slip-knot. Very good for dock posts. Knot very good for cleats. Tie a slip knot around the pier post, take the tag end and tie another through the loop of the first slip knot and the main line. It works like the triple rings on a parachute harness. Each loop is reinforced by the next loop, very strong and pulls free with a light tug. Hope this helps. Good luck good fishin.

This is a kind of a stacked slip knot and is also used in macrame, Instead of slipping to tighten, it slips to untie. It's pretty simple to tie.
With a little practice you can tie a chain of ~ 6-8 knot's in 15 seconds. This is usually enough to hold anything and the chain cannot untie itself, i.e., from the boat movement etc.
For right handers- (lefties just reverse the hands)
Put the line around the dock post or through the cleat with about 4' of line as a tag end.
Grasp the tag end in your right hand (thumb toward the dock)and the load side(the line between the boat and dock) in your left hand w/ thumb toward the boat.
1. Twist your left hand ~180 degrees to form a loop in the load line
2. Reach through the loop with your left hand and grasp the tag end just ahead of your right hand (between your tag end hand and the dock-don't let go of the tag end)
3. While still holding the tag end with your right hand, using your left hand pull the tag end rope back through the loop you formed with your left hand.
4. This forms a new loop and the begining of the knot chain. Pull on both the loop and the tag end to tighten the initial knot.
Simply repeat step 2-3-4 to add more knots to the chain- then slip the tag end through the last knot loop as a safey. To untie- just pull the tag end out of the last loop and pull- the knots in the chain will unzip.
