I want to order a pair but am confused by the differences. They offer a hi leverage CENTER cutter or a DIAGONAL cutter. In the picts they look the same. Can anyone elaborate on the differences. Both are 10" long.

I bought the ones without the compound action because they were a bit longer makeing them a bit safer in my mind. I got them at the pittsburg show. At the same show my buddy bought the compound action. While they are shorter they cut the hooks a bit easier as tests on our brand new willey baits back at the hotel proved. If you use realy big xx hooks the compound is prolly the way to go. The lengths aren`t the same as you stated though. Andy

I was told to buy a 'side' cutter because the hesd is smaller and will be able to get out a swallow hook down by the gills easier. Maybe he meant getting to the hook at the gill plate. All I know is I wasted money on a cheap pair last year and regret it now.

Yes good point the side cutter does have a smaller head and that makes it easier to get at hooks. Coupled with the longer handles they are prolly the better choice most of the time.

I have the Knipex compound cutters and they work great, You can get them into very tight spots and they cut hooks like a hot knife thru butter.
Good hunting,Jeff<*)))))><

I wasted money on the Cabela's hook cutters I bought and decided to go with the best on the market (or so I've read). I found the Knipex model # 7112, 8" spring loaded mini bolt cutters at www.chadstoolbox.com (http://www.chadstoolbox.com) for $42.99 plus $8.95 S&H. It will be nice having cutters that work with only one hand! Good for me. Good for Girtha! :raisin:

Chad's tool box is the place to get the better price on them knipex.
Go to Fleet and buy the same thing for $15 -$20. Hooks aren't a hard thing to cut for any decent compound cutter but you definatly want the compound style.

I picked one one that is similar at Home Depot last year for a 1/3 of the price. So far I have cut hooks of all sizes, no problem. If you are worried, go to HD, buy one, bring it home, and try cutting some hooks. If you are unhappy, take it back.

Picked up wire cutters at sears for 8 bucks. Have never had a problem cutting through the biggest of musky lure hooks. The fact that musky fishermen need 50 dollar cutters is confusing to me. I do not understand the benefit of "knipex cutters" compared to my wire cutters. Im not trying to be sarcastic, so maybe someone could explain.

Can you tell us the brand or model? I've wasted a couple Chinese mini bolt cutters trying to cut through musky hooks and need to buy a decent pair.
Come to think of it I got mine at Home Depot too. I'm not sure of the brand but they are right by the bigger ones. If anyone uses hooks these can't easily cut they have to after Moby Dick.

Menard's. $4.69. Will easily cut any hook (short of a 16/0 shark hook) and will last a lifetime . . . or until it's dropped overboard. I always have one in the boat.

That Toolshop brand is no good from my experience.
Two years ago up on big smokey i had a fish engulf a mag. bulldawg. when trying to cut the bulldawg hooks out i couldn't do it with one hand. When i tried using two the handles folded/bent right in on each other. I was lucky my buddy had a pair.
The big rapala brand cut that hook. So i went and bought those and they seem to do the job thus far.
This is the fish-forty minutes later my buddy boated a 48" x 24" monster.

I have the home depot kind and they have worked fine for a few years now. Why pay 50.00 for something that could easily end up on the bottom of the lake ? If you ever had a muckie thrash just when you were about to cut a hook, you know what I mean.
I second the Tool Shop being poor. They just fall apart.

get the knipex..they are worth every penny..i used cheapos for years and it was counter productive.
tie a rope on one handle...make a wrist loop...tape it up and down the handle and it won't fall in the drink.
they are an investment and should be protected.
i now have one and a spare on the way.

I have a set of the 8" mini Knipex bolt cutters as well as a set of the H.K Porter's. Which ever one is handy is the one that gets used, no problems at all with Porters. Yes, the Knipex are more comfortable in the hand, smaller neck, not as bulky...but they both cut hooks fine.
That said...I'd like to see a set of 10-12" or so with the same head...just longer handles. When they're stuck deep...8" is a little iffy.
