View Full Version : This year compared to last year
How did everyone do so far this year compared to last year? Just curious if it was a good or bad year so far. I did about the same in numbers and size of fish caught.

Last year we caught 57 muskie, 28 of them mine. This year we have 53 muskie and 30 are mine. Better year for me and if we don't freeze soon, our total will be better too.
Thanks Todd
I know every lake is different as far as how the fishing is. I am just curious since those #s are very impressive compared to mine. How many times a week do you fish? How much time do you put in on the lake? and do your primarily cast or troll?

My numbers this year are down, I normally catch between 25 - 30 a year, with about 60-70 in the boat.
This year I have only have 10 for myself, but the sizes were very nice. 8 fish were 40" or better, with a 54" the biggest.
I didn't get out as much as other years, but it was a great year just the same.
It does seem that most of my fishing buddies were down a little from the last couple of years as well.

J, I am fishing once a week on average. We start in april and fish untill december. I have missed about 6 or 7 weekends. I used to fish just as much when I first started and never caught more than 10 and never more than 20 in the boat. We redid everything we were and do things different now. One of those things was fishing too slow. If you don't like your fishing successes you have to change things, wether it be your lake selection, your method of fishing, times you fish, ect. We troll alot but cast alot too. About 60/40 troll to cast.

This year was really good. I caught over 60 muskies and quite a few between 48" and 51". The year 2002 was not as good for me. Mostly because of the floods that hit LOTW. It put the fishing off some.

This year was awesome for me and my wife with 88 caught and 4 over 50 inches at LOTW. Can't compare to last year as this is my first fishing the there, all I know is that I love this lake!!!
Here are some of my pics of fish caught throughout the year on LOTW:

As far as contacting fish, I had a great year. BUT...I had alot of short hits, miss hits, fish that just did not get hooks, etc. I lost more than I boated (lost about 15 or so...7 straight in September) and boated about 12 - 13. Highlight of the year was finally fishing LOTW and the wife caught a fat 46....her only fish of the year. I managed to have 4 hits on that trip...but those were part of my 15 lost... all on top raiders that had the original hooks on them. I set those aside on my home waters since they have never been too productive for me there, and never had another hit on them when I tried (those will have to wait until next year). I would sum it up as being a frustrating year for putting fish in the boat. I was not doing something right...
Is it June yet?!!
Steve
great year for me in wisconsin and a very tough lotw trip with the only highlight being the fish of a lifetime (mid 50's) following in on the last cast .... didn't like when a boat-mate ran across the boat to look at her ... ughh ... best part of the year was putting 3 newbies onto first fish ... all over 45"!!!
Thanks--I have the same numbers as last year due to a 3 hour trip I took to the lake one night after work. My best day so far. 5 muskies on ,4 in the boat.I still only caught 8 fish this year. I did cast more this year and had some nice follows, but no hook ups. I look at it this way .As long as I learn something new about muskies fishing each year it was a good year. I will have to look into changing some stuff. Thanks for the advice.
EsxoHunter nice pictures !
EH, do you have pictures of the over 50's?

My numbers are down mostly do to me putting in less time and effort. The other problem is the Tiger muskies have all but dissappeared from Greenwood lake. I used to catch between one half and two dozen tigers in a season. Haven`t caught or heard of anyone catching a tiger in two years now. Our local biologists and fisheries crews are working on the tiger problem so hopefully they will be back soon.I miss them. The good news is the size of the true strains caught were impressive. Best day three in one hour 50" 48" and 41". I think i need to change some of my tactics next year as well. Andy

Three of them are there on the site #21, 22 and 28, the fourth I don't have due to my digital camera malfunctioning from the cold.
Thanks Andy--We will have to see what new tactics work. I tried to learn what I could this year from watching a musky in a fish tank. It was interesting, but I didn't learn anything that would help me on the water. Is there any talk about re-stocking Greenwood with Tigers?
Bob I think I asked you this before. Did you fish Greenwood last year and do you have a Boston Whaler? I met someone last year that fished Greenwood in a whaler, but I didn't see them this year at all.
Well I took the boat out already this year. My last trip last year was Dec 7th weekend. It is hard to clean the boat that late in the year with the water freezing on the boat.
More and bigger fish this year than last!

This has been my worst year of the last 20. Only 3 C & R. 1 from the lake 2 from the river, all in the 3' range. Was trolling for the 1st time this year. Had the lines run over to many times and the boat run into 4 times in 1 night with all the lights on. ( trust the G.P.S. you won't hit land ). So, put the Tri-Hull away for the year, moved the equipment to the canoe and returned to my childhood fishin spots in the river. Started havin alot more fun. Good luck, Good fishin for all.

Catch was about the same, 13 vs 15 last year, 3 over 40". Fish caugth, saw, & lost was just about a mirror image. It's what I expect when you fish about the same about of hours each year, the numbers should vary only by the amount of luck, with a few more caught or lost each year. 15 is my record for most caught, with 10-12 the average for the last 10 years. I'll know I'm on to something new and beter when I break that 20 fish season, and repeat it consistently. Till then, it's always a great year for you catch at least some fish!
Line ain't thru all my guides!
