We've finally got "normal" weather the past 9 days, it hasnt been above freezing and the mean temperature has been about 10.

Most of the lakes around here have a few inches some of the bays even more. I fished a small lake which has a river running right thru it yesterday and it had 2-3 inches of ice.

The lake I'd like to fish is still wide open, there is some current and a few springs but all in all it is similar to other lakes in the area that have ice. What gives??

The other lake that is not frozen yet is most likely Deeper and Clearer water. Takes those a bit longer. ?

If your area is anything like ours (Erie) it stayed warm for such a long time that it's going to take a bit to get the water temp down cold enough to freeze. Here the water temp had to drop 10*. That'll take a few good cold days. Also depth and wind will play a key role in assisting a turn over of water.

I'm in upstate NY, just about 45 miles southeast of Buffalo. Our weather has been very mild up until the last 10 days. Now we're getting clobbered with the Lake Effect snow. We have almost 5 feet now, and still snowing. Lake Erie water temperature is 35, it should start to freeze over within the next week. A cold front is finally moving in and I expect temperatures to drop from zero to -20 in the next few nights. This will definately freeze up our lakes and shut off the lake effect machine. Ray

Ray,
Would that put you anywhere near Silver Lake? If so, would you let me know if/when she freezes up? Thanks.

On a better note....I did see some people out on Braddocks Bay yesterday. Not sure how much ice or if they were catching anything but they were out there.

Coma - that must be it - there are people driving ATV's on a much bigger lake 5 miles from here, even heard of cars out on another nearby. But as of this morning - still wide open.

This lake is about 85' and has been very clear recently.

Depth is the key. More volume of water takes longer to cool down. Shallower lakes freeze earlier than deeper ones.

Here it is 1 Jan '02, and the Red River up here through Winnipeg is still open in some areas. Up past Selkirk I'm not sure, but some guys are putting their shacks out.

Hey Mike,
Land heats and cools faster than water.
Limby says that Squaw Bay on Monona was giving up some dandy Panfish.
Take care,
