if this is the tourney in ontario. i was told it has been cancelled due to political pressure of a cash tourney. there is talk of having tourneys monitered by the can dnr,even permits to hold one. this is not going to go over very big with sponsors and contributors

Unhappy, why do you say "this is not going to go over very big
with sponsors and contributors"? Just curious ... what difference would tournament regulation or having to get a permit make to the sponsors and contributors?

John was putting on a great event and I am one of the many that will be missing it this year. I had already booked the extra night stay ( as I am fishing the Can-Am the weekend before the Green Acre tourney ) and was just told a few weeks ago he had decided to not have it this year.
There is a hole lot of reasons for him cancelling but the accusations of someone cheeting is a #### of a more valid one then the politic issue. I fished the event my last 2 times at the Can-Am and would fish it again this year if I could but I am also one that believes our MNR needs to take measures to have some kind of control on any kind of muskie tournament as we have a precious fisheries up here and I want it to stay that way. The green acres tournament is not the reason some of us are pushing for these regulations and everybody knows that. We need to stop people from having tournaments for sublegal fish on LOTW, Georgian bay and every other trophy class waters in Canada period. I can never understand awarding a person a check for winning a tournament for catching a fish under the MNR set limit for that waterbody. I am sure in MN no one can win a tourney with fish under the 40 inch state wide limit, so why should it be any different here in Canada.
I hope everyone will still come and enjoy the Can-Am this year as it's going to be a blast as always.

John McBride's tournament is/was in many ways a model of how to run a competitive muskie fishing event. The high-density fishery of the Kawarthas could absorb the pressure of the large field. There was no transporting of fish nor waiting for judge boats to validate catches. The event was held later in the season, thus sparing the fish from the added rigour of the dog days of July and August. Clearly John took great care to minimize undue wear and tear on the fishery.
The loudest call for tournament regulation in Ontario is coming from cottage associations whose members have seen weekend bass tourney's proliferate in the last decade. I've heard many representatives from "the industry" express the view that these events need to be limited and regulated.
If the day comes when muskie tournaments are indeed regulated in Ontario, as they are already in all US states with significant wild stocks, I expect John's tournament format will serve as a model for other organizers. I understand as well that John didn't profit from the event, but instead turned over a good portion of the proceeds to a local kids hockey program (but I don't know this for certain). It's a shame that the cheating/accusations emerged but maybe this is an ineviatble result of cash prizes and a field of participants expanding beyond what was originally a close-knit group of friends.

its a sad day once again to have your goverment involved with permits for your contest on fishing. would that not be another taxation on the fisherman. what does your goverment do for the fish. everything comes from sportsmen groups. think of your tourism dollars. does the gov not set the guidelines on harvest. do not most fisherman release all muskies. this is another sad issue about to develop in canada. sorry i dont buy it

There is nothing wrong with finding a solution before the problem starts. We have a great fishery and would like it to stay that way. Are we supossed to wait for the big money tourneys to get established before we do anything about it? There was a new muskie organisation established last January and a couple of days later they announced a cash tourney on LOTW, it's pretty easy to see what they are trying to do.
Like it was mentionnned before, all over the states the tournaments are regulated, why should they not be here in Canada? Right now anyone can have any kind of tourney on any waters on whatever day they would like.
We need to stop the snowball before it starts heading downhill.

Muskie Chaser,
Here's an overview of some of the conflicts that have arisen over unregulated tournaments (all species) in the Kawarthas in southern Ontario. In this situation "the government" was only a mediator among a group of stakeholders who worked together to try to address conflicts with each other and manage the resource sustainably. I am only the messenger!

I think you misunderstood my comments. I didn't state a viewpoint, pro- or anti- regulation. I stated only that John ran a good tournament out of his trailer park. Too bad about about the cheaters.
You seem to have mighty strong views about how we Canadian anglers should be looking after our resources!
Good fishing to you my friend, where ever you may live.

* Number of events and competitive anglers on each lake.
* Number of dead fish from tournaments.
* Where and how fish are released into the lake after the tournament.
* Transfers of fish between lakes.
* Monitoring events to ensure they are following the standards of operation.
* Donations from organizers to conservation projects.
* Using information from tournaments to help manage fisheries.
* Impacts of tournament activities on other animals, for example loons.
* Education and communication about tournaments.
The participants included:
*OMNR
*Kawartha Fisheries Association
* Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters
* Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce (Canada U.S. Walleye Tournament)
* Rice Lake Tourist Association
* Loon Survey
* Ontario Bass Federation
* Tournament Organizations:
