New user here and new to musky fishing. I have enjoyed many types of fishing for over 40 years and am looking forward to landing my first musky on purpose. I have scheduled a trip to the Moon river area near Georgian Bay in Sept. I have heard excellent reports and am looking forward. Has anyone been to this area? If so I would greatly appreciate any helpful information. I am told the water is very clear and I know there is an abundance of most any structure. I have a Okuma Indron and a Penn 965 both on mh 7' rods. What should I spool with? 20# mono or more? Braid? Flourocarbon leaders of what test? If anyone is very familiar with this area I would like to corospond. By the way, I am catch & release (when I catch)

Hey Izzy,

The fishing has been good since the opener and is usually very good in September. I would take Ol Pharts recomendation on 80lb braid (power pro line). This is big fish water so plan on big baits, big line and big nets. This water is classified as trophy class water so the size limit on the Moon and Georgian Bay is 54". I offer two important bits of advice. This area has lots of rock hazzards and much of the Moon river is not charted or marked so go slow and be careful. My best advise for fishing musky on the Moon River is to stay out of the shallow backbays and be prepared to get skunked because Georgian Bay and Moon river is not a an easy water for a newbie, or even an expereinced musky fisherman for that matter.

I still have an open weekend and some weekdays if you need a tour guide.

Thanks Ol Phart....

Hey, Thanks a million for the reply. I intend to go big, I am little by little acquiring some nice baits. Fully intend to use 80# power pro and heavy flouro leaders. Thanks also for the hazard tips, I always take it slow in new water,I have learned the hard way. As this will be the first time I am seriously targeting muskies I have been doing my homework. A lot of reading and I sent for an In-Fisherman muskie video. I do not expect to arrive at the Moon River and just start hauling fish out of the water. If I get one healthy muskie while there I will be more than pleased. But you know fishermen, once we get the first we want the second, then the third and on and on. I also enjoy just seeing my new surroundings and I am not super intense. I have no problem setting the rod down and getting a sandwich out of the cooler. But don't get me wrong, If I get a follow or a strike my heart will be pounding. Thanks again. Can't wait fo rSeptember. Brent

HEY IZZY
GB IS " THE " GUIDE ON THAT WATER & IF YOUR SMART YOU WILL GET HOLD OF HIM FOR YOUR OUTING . IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH IT . HE'S NOT KIDDING ABOUT THE BOATING HAZZARDS . YOU MAY END UP SPENDING YOUR ENTIRE TRIP IN THERE WITH NOTHING TO SHOW , HE ...WILL ...PUT YOU ON FISH .

Hey Brent,

If you get a follow it will likely be over 20lbs thats average for me on the moon. Wait until you see your first 50lb fish though...lol... I hope you have a strong ticker becuase it will be pumping and your knees will be shakin.....lol.. We see them every year.

Don't go crazy buying lures. I find allot of guys come up and fish with lures that work on other waters but not there. 4 or 5 special lures is all you will need on the Moon river and it will cost you about $155.00. For trolling lures check out the new 9 inch Wild Canuck lures. The best guides up there use these for trolling and Ol Phart should be able to help you out finding a store near you and get you the right colors for the Moon and Georgian Bay.
