I'm heading to LOTW in a week, bringing my 5 yr old daughter along too. What type of ID does she need to leave from/return to the states? I've heard passports aren't required until next year. Will a birth certificate alone work?

An original birth certificate, not a copy, is sufficient for ID. However, if you are traveling with her alone, without her mother, then you should have a notarized letter from her stating that it is OK to take your daughter across the border. Also make sure that the mother is accessible by phone at the time you cross the border. 9 times out of 10 you won't be asked but if they do and you don't have the letter you will be turned away. Have a great trip!

You're welcome. Also keep in mind that starting in 2007 a Passport will be a requirement. Another good message board for info is http://www.justfishontario.com/phpbb2/
Lots of good fishing info and border info too.

I just got back from Ontario with my two boys. The canadian customs asked for a birth certificate and US customs asked for nothing....US customs did ask me to open the sliding door on the minivan and then he proceeded to chat with the boys.
