Hi all,
I fish a small lake that's loaded with all kinds of underwater vegetation. I've seen muskies in the vegetation and have caught a few in the past using stuff like weed less spoons, jigs, tops waters and bulging bucks.
This year the lake has been low and the vegetation is very thick and even spread out more. It's difficult to fish without getting all snagged up... I'm looking for a weed less lure that can get down a few feet and has good presentation. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim

yep right on whith the spinnerbait. A double bladed spinner bait like a rad dog is key. nice hooks on the rad dogs also great color. The silver tincle is good to have as well.
The reason why I say double bladed is good for weeds is cause I have found that it catches less weeds than a tandem.
A good tip for if you think the muskys are realy down thick in the weeds or simply cant see your bait because so much greens. after your cast start reeling in fast and stick your rod tip strait into the water and rip you spinnerbait through the weeds and make sure you are feeling the weeds and pull out of them fast. the key is to find pockets that hold fish. so pull through weeds if you think you might get snaged. The hardest part is a good solid hook set with this method. The moment you feel a strike get your rod out of the water then set the hook. It may take a split second to get it out and set but it realy is worth it. Try it out. Its pretty good for weed choked lakes like you speak of.

Yeah, using a spinner bait is key. The heavily weeded lakes that I have fished have produced fish using spinner baits. Just make sure and set the hook good and hard. I have seen many of fish get off using spinner baits, but other times I have seen three caught within hours. Good luck

Jim,
Under those conditions it's hard to beat a safety pin style spinnerbait. Some are better than others. Pearson Grinders, and Rad dog's are my favorites. Use the single blade versions and point the rod directly at the lure Crank at a slow steady pace. Whatever you do.....Resist the temptationto ripthe weeds free when you hang up I sometimes stop and let the bait work it's way through the stalks. I also prefer the heavier baits 2.5-3.5 Oz. Another good one is the Slopmaster but this bait will ride up the weeds and work it's way loose. If there is a little open water between the weeds and the surface use a SS Shad by Smoker Tackle or the Crane Shad I don't know the # but it is the 6" Jointed Model.
Hope this Helps,

Before I opt for spinnerbaits I tie on my trusty Mepps Timber Doodle. This has to be the most underrated lure on the market. I've used them for years, recommend them to customers all the time in our shop and the results speak loudly.
Bass, northern and yes, muskie are all tempted by this extremely weedless bait. Combined with a Twister Tail it's virtually impossible to work wrong so twitch, jerk, jig, flip, pitch straight retrieve, you name it, it works.
Mike,
Am not aware of the Mepps Timber Doddle, will be in the GCPS later today and will look you and the TD up. Probably should add that to my arsenal.
Cheers and tight lines,
Musky Mike
