I don't post much, mostly just read and learn; but recent events have compelled me to put some thoughts in print. Some of you may have seen on the news recently a helicopter crash in Utah resulted in the loss of three lives. During a moose transplant, the helicopter hit a powerline and crashed killing all three aboard. The Division of Wildlife (DWR) employee lost (Jerry Openshaw)was a very close friend of mine. He had worked for DWR for about four years in various capacities ranging from info tech at the front desk to I & E manager to most recently an Aquatic Biologist working for me. Although he had various titles throughout his shortened career, his passion was teaching kids about the outdoors and in particular, to fish. His patience and teaching methods always amazed me, the kids always remembered his message, even when the adults didn't.
Now what I ask of you, my brother and sister anglers, is to remember the family in your thoughts and prayers. At age 34, Jerry left a wife and three beautiful daughters. He also lost a brother on month earlier, so his parents are taking this especially hard. I'm having a hard time finishing this, so I'll be brief. If you go to www.wildlife.utah.gov there should be a story showing up in the near future. If you have trouble linking to it, feel free to email me at nrdwr.ksorenso@state.ut.us and I'll get you any information I can. There is a memorial fund for any of you so inclined to contribute, just email me for the details. I don't want to turn this into a fund-raising event. The prayers are of more concern to me. Thanks.

My sympathies go out to you, his family, and friends. So young, so talented...such a loss. God bless.

That accident really shook up my family. We live nearby and travel Parley's frequently. I've seen deer hit on that stretch of the canyon, and I've seen moose on the roadside too. Hitting a moose through there would be disasterous.

It's also worth pointing out that those guys do this routinely--transplanting wildlife with helicopters--so it's something they're good at.

My family's thoughts and prayers are with them and their families, and all who go in harm's way to protect and improve my quality of life.
