View Full Version : most popular sized ice auger, folks, sorry to keep beating this horse, just have spent too much money before on impulse and want to do the proper research. If you are using a hole bigger than 8", plea

I once heard Dave Genz say he wants to be invited to a lake that has a fish in it he can't get thru a six in hole. My power auger has an eight. It's plenty. I stepped into one once, and my size 15 boot went in. Seemed real big at the time. My hand auger is a six, because I couldn't find a five.
the bigger hole, when wanting to fish the same hole the next day or two, doesn't close in as fast. (nothing worse than to reem out an existing hole) mr. genz, who i have great respect for, fishes for 'small' fish. (just kiddin'!) yes, the average fish will come up through the six or eight, but more room is simply better.

I use two augers - a hand Lazer for early ice, and a gas Lazer for the thicker stuff. I prefer a 7" hand and a 10" gas. I like the 7" vs the 8" in hand due to the fact that you remove less ice (23% less) and, therefore, it takes less time (and energy) to drill the hole. I like a 10" in gas because I think it's easier to get the fish turned up the hole, especially on thicker ice. I also catch bigger fish than most folks do! :) Actually, if the size fish you catch reflects auger size to use, I could probably sell the augers and use a cordless drill!
Regards
7" hand auger (easier to use);
10" power auger (that size was on sale);
Chain saw (for the big ones)!
