What's up with all the stuff? or Holy Crap!

By Tom Wehler > Feb - 2004

Was watching people walk by our little "Zoo Booth" here at this Muksy Only Expo type show.
Got to thinking today about what it must be like for people today interested in or even trying out this Esox fishing thing?
Picked up a booklet advertising lures and muskie gear to fit your every need.
I been doing this muskie thing a long while and Unbelievable was what my mind kept saying as I was hitting myself in the forehead with my palm.
Holy crap!
80 different style rods. 50 special reels built just for muskies.
12 brands of line, all in so many words claiming to be more flexible or the strongest, driest, longest lasting.
One even claimed to hold up a bridge if it were to fall, if only for a short time.
135 different type bucktails, 30 different spinner baits saying they have over 100 color of hair & blade combinations to select from. Some even have exclusive colors and limited edition specials. Wow!
123 different pull baits, 158 different crank type lures, 72 surface lures each with an average of 8 and as many as 20 patterns or colors to choose from. All in one way or another claming to be a must have bait or have the sure fire monster muskie magic wiggle, juke, jive, clink, clank or clunk.. some mention a redhead, but she must be shy as I have yet to find her any place in any section.
Seeing this many things in one booklet sort of shocked me. Looking further into this container of mystical muskie things the magic booklet shows how you can purchase these items on-line, over the phone or by yelling really load from across the water or street. Even simply just walking in and asking what's hot this week also.
Shows many brands of hooks in over 8 varieties and average of 5 sizes each.
I see rings, pliers, spreaders, nets, cradles, and files, even magic muskie juice.
Man I wonder what that is?
Do I drink it, get the fish to drink it or mix up a potion with it on shore around the camp fire, do a dance and dump it into the lake? Gezzzzzzzzzz I got to get some of that for sure.
Many different types of feathers, hair, eyes, releases, snipers, wires, leaders, swivels, weights, sunglasses, huge bobbers, scissors, rigs of many kinds, rod holders and aerators.
They even have lure kits so you can make your own lure just in case what they have to offer in not just right or good enough. Amazing.
Even found some glue for the knots you tie? That just sounds a little goofy to me. Might just be best to simply learn how to tie a good strong knot. But then what fun wold that be?
Full pages of videos and books that I guess tell you how, where, when and why to fish for these fish.
I used to just go to the lake and have some fun, see fishy looking areas and get some lures wet.
Don't see any pretty women or story line mentioned any place in these books or vides so I think I'll pass.
Found a number of rubber creatures of many colors that say they get the big one. If they don't you could sure scar the crap out of people at work or on Halloween.
Tackle boxes so large and pretty I wanted to pack up and go on a trip. I bet with a little effort I could put a weeks worth of stuff I wear in there, plus one of my hounds, get on a plane and go to the beach in San Diego.
A wide selection of maps that send you to all the best spots and promise one will never get lost. Some made of paper, some plastic and some waterproof too. Some even so fancy they fit on a mmc chip and go into a depth finder. Wonder if they have French onion or sour cream flavor?
I even found a section that has rain suits, also hats, shirts, pants, towels, and gloves.

If by chance you run out of money to put gas in the tank of the truck that gets you on the water, you can at least look pretty and be dry at home on the deck in the back yard watching other people fish on the videos.
So much musky stuff it is truly overwhelming. I know, have bought into it, seen others do it to.
My hope to save someone's credit rating or marriage here with this small admission of guilt and observation of excess.
Moderation is a good thing I have come to realize but still don't see many pratice.

Some where along the line, a not so far drive down the lake from a time not so long ago, it seems that a few of us have forgotten about what it really takes to get your partner yelling fish on!
That if you don't have the latest lure, rod, reel, line, boat, motor, hat, magic muskie measuring stick or potion your still a good guy or gal and will still get bit.
We might all do well to slow it on down a bit, take a look at what we are buying and laugh.
Maybe then go take a kid, the wife or the hounds and go hit the water to do some fishing. Remember Mom or Dad got most of us started. When is the last time you had them out for some one on one fun in the boat?
All mentioned above items are good things for someone and show progress beyond anything I ever thought might happen. But in the end, the fish in the waters we fish are still eating the same things they been eating for a long, long time.
Fun to buy all this stuff if you can afford it, but to a new muskie fishing person it must be a bit of if not a whole lot unbelievable as to what it looks like it takes to get into this sport?

Basic things to remember when buying lures by are High, Low, Fast, Slow, Light, Dark and something really bight and weird will cover it all and help get you bit anytime any place.
So next time your out muskie shopping, see any new people standing in the shop looking befuddled and or drooling, maybe give them a hand and a boot in the right direction. It is easy if you try.
Fact is if you have a decent rod an reel, some good line, a leader or two, a hand full of lures that cover the basic areas musky like to hang on, in or around, maybe a boat but not necessarily, some time, and a love of fishing. Just go hit the water, you will do well, have fun and learn as you go.
In this go fast world of instant gratification, have to get it all now and go do something else attitude, simple is still the best.

Uncomplicated.

Keep on rocken!

********

Everyone seems kinda silly to me
Running around never trying to see.
Looken for help in the telephone book
Always trying to find the invisible HOOK.
A whole lotta times, you know, I tried to find
any way to get a little peace of mind.
Then one day, quite accidentally
I came across the truth, found out it was FREE.
