Has anyone ever used a spinning rig for muskies? I just picked up a 7' custom spinning rod that is rated for lures up to 4 oz. I have a nice cardinal 6 that I'm planning on using. Any line, lure or presentation suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

The only thing I use a spinning outfit for when fishing muskies is jigging. I have that outfit set up with a 45 size reel and 17lb. mono. The rig works real well for that application however I don't think I would like it for much else except maybe very light(like rapala) cranks or bucktails. All of my other casting setups are either 50lb. tiger braid or 80lb. tufline/powerpro.

Sure. Years ago, there wasn't a baitcasting reel worth using as a sinker. Now there are a lot of good baitcasters out there that don't backlash on every cast like days of old. Get yourself a light-saltwater open face and rig it with something like 17lb Stren Clear mono, or go to a line such as Power Pro to 60lb or so. 6'-7'-8' rod (depending on what you're throwing) works just fine. There's no law that says you have to fish baitcasters for muckys. When it's really cold and the rod guides on a baitcaster rod are freezing, you'll be glad you have a big open-face rig in the boat....and keep fishing with the big guides typical of that kind of rod.
