Any thoughts on this unit?? I was all set to get the Garmin 12, until I got all confused by advice and am now leaning towards this one lol. Let me share how I will most likely be utilizing a GPS. I don't hunt or care to use it for vehicle navigation, I fish only. I go to Canada 3-4 weeks per year, some popular lakes, some pretty remote. It was my understanding that lakes in Canada are not "accurate" as far as their outlines, etc. Even the U.S. lakes don't show depth contours, etc, just outlines. I think what I will be doing most often with this unit is marking humps, points, landings, trolling routes, etc. What is the advantage to getting a mapping unit?? Am I missing something?? At this point, is it something nice to have when all the lakes in Canada and U.S. are able to download in the future?? Thanks. "I fish cuz the voices in my head tell me to"

I bought the GM100 to use for deer hunting because I could use software that came with my 160 on boat. Once I used mapping I'd never go back to just a plotter. You actually see yourself moving toward, around,or thru the marker bouys and reefs I fish at Erie. The only problem with the 100 I had is it eats batteries, so I got the cig. adapter and plugged it into 4-wheeler plug. Dan

not sure if you'll be able to get navionics for the lakes your talking about. in my experience, i have not seen any "canadian shoreline" on lake erie/detroit river that allows you to zoom in more than 2 miles as of yet on any unit. when running in fog etc, you need to be able to zoom into .1 miles to avoid some obsticles. i've used mine before the 160 i have now. also with the 160, i mark safe depth points as i run so i have something to use as markers when i need to zoom in and run along the canadian shore. using track-up/course up, that unit should do you just fine after you mark the waypoints etc you need. mapping would give you the ablity to upload/download any info you have or record since you would have the puter hook up. which can be worth the expense in the long run vs no mapping capibility.
hope that makes sense.

I have a Global Map 100. I like the unit. It locks on very quickly, and is easy to use for the most part. My only complaint is with the small screen. It's just too small to see very well. I used to have an Eagle Accunav Sport as I recall. The screen was larger and easier to read. As for the Global Map, by the time you add all the extra detail from the CD ROM download, I feel it just clutter's up the screen to the point of being confusing. So I've chosen not to download the extra detail on to mine. But as I said, other than that it's a great unit. Especially for the price.
