The new Cabelas line counter in the 2002 catalog looks a lot like an Okuma, anybody know who makes it for them?

Don't know anything about them, but they do look a lot like the new linecounter in the Bass Pro catalog!

If you are talking about the "Gold" model - I would agree. I was looking at this one yesterday. One thing I noticed is that the spool was metal, where my Okuma is "plastic", or a similare type material as the rest of the reel housing. I was surprised at the price because you can purchase the Okuma 30DX models for much less than $79.00. Maybe there are some upgrade features from the Okuma 30DX model, but it sure appears to be a Okuma model.

Cabela's Line Counter has a machine cut one piece aluminum spool, Okuma=Plastic.
Cabela's Line Counter has machine cut brass gear, Okuma=stamped gears.
Cabela's has upgraded the drag system, to a rulon washer, smoother and more durable.
Cabela's includes both a power and double paddle handle on the 20 and 30 sizes, and has recalibrated the reels to be 98% accurate @100' of line out.

Hmmm...I wonder...when the drag burns out on mine if they will upgrade it to the new one. I know they have been replacing them for people.
Okuma also makes a reel with a metal spool. i have 4 of them myself. i think it is called a contender, it is a 20dx also.as far as the 2 handles, all that sold in the 20 series last year all had 2 handles. As far as the reels being acurate with 100 foot of line out, they may be, but if they are, they would then be in-acurate with a full spool of line, because ALL line counters are based on the revolutions of the spool for the counters to be acurate. the only truely acurate counters are the ones that measure the amount of LINE going through a system in itself.like the counters that attach to the rods, seperate of the reel. i am not knocking the reels made for the other 2 companys, i am just stating facts that i know . as far as the gearing i have not seen anywhere where it says that the okuma gears are not machined or that they are stamped, i honestly dont know which they are, but mine all 18 of them have never been a problem, and some are being used for musky, and salmon. for the price they have been super for me. you will get good and bad ones of all brands, but for me thay have been great. Also for the new year the Okuma is also making a new reel that is larger than the 30 series, or larger than the 47 diawa. sorry to be so long winded. good luck and good fishin.

Hey Den! Happy New Year, my friend.
Heres an interesting line counter reel, you might have heard about. I got one for christmas. Its a digital LCD Penn reel. Whats interesting is how you load the line on it. It has a seperate attachment they call a "bogey wheel" that you attach to the reel before you load the line. It has a roller that rides on the spool and then on the line as you fill it. I think the concept is that somehow it tells the computer inside the reel the line diameter by how quickly it fills vs the revolutions of the reel. You then remove this contraption until the next time you fill the reel. I asked for a line counter reel for christmas and this is what I got. Seems like a pretty nice reel, always liked my Penns. I really am wary if this thing will last, though. Time will tell I guess!
The penn is the best most accurate one made. it counts like i said, a different set up completely. congrats on the reel.the cost factor on that reel makes it a little out of reach for most people who have to run many outfits. it be the top of the line. keep in touch. good luck and good fishin.
