Has anyone tried using a 12 volt battery for a cordless drill to power their electronics on the ice? This seems like a light weight option to me.

Have considered using the one from my 12 volt cordless drill but with some of the cheap gel cell batteries out there, they seem to be a better alternative. Besides that, you can buy accessories such as ice pack platforms etc. and most have a molded in battery tray to fit the rectangular gel cell batteries. You might want to look at charge life, feasability in use, complications for hook-up, etc. I know that I would forget the drill pack batteries in my boat everytime I put the cover on so it's nice to just have a gel cell to run my fishfinders. Good use of logic and creative ingenuity on your part though. Don't let me discourage you from trying it. Let me know if it works. I might try it too. Blaze.

Just how "cheap" are these gel cell batty's, and where would I find one? I'm looking to make some sort of portable box, that I can mount my GPS on, and us the cig lighter to plug into a power source. Thanks!

Some of the guy's on this board recommended a gel cell 12v that gander mountain sells with charger for $19.99 well bought one and sold another since this Friday. The battery now sits in a sewn nylon bag, and waist belt, with cigarette type plug-in. I took LED cigarette plug in off of old cell phone charger, now know power upon plugging her in. The hand held spotlight on the belt is awesome ;)
also have Graph on cig... connector, quick and slick.

The lighter plug system sounds like a good way to go for all around versatility. I noticed some small sealed rechargable batteries on ebay for around $12 might give them a look too.
