View Full Version : Reflective tape on ice shanty
I'm curious if anyone has put reflective tape on their ice shanty for safety? I wonder if any of you have been concerned about a snowmobile stopping in uninvited? Sleds and alcohol seem to go hand in hand with some.
My portable shanty is black and I want to make sure it can be seen at night on a dark lake. I fish at night and on some lakes I've been the only one out there in the past.
Have any of you put reflective tape or paint on your shanties?

Yes, thats a great idea. Heck, I have reflective tape on a bunch of my equipment if for no other reason than its easy to see of I left something behind!

I put strips of Automotive reflective tape on all sides of my Fishtrap (including the top, in case it is in a partially up position). It comes off by the end of the season, but it is worth the piece of mind. I came a bit closer than I would have liked to being mowed down by a high speed sled 2 years ago. The sled came between me and my auger after seeing me at the last minute. I have some velcro and permanent reflectors that I will be trying when I have time to set it up.

Has to be a good idea, you ought to see what a drunk motorhead can do to a wooden shanty! But on the other hand if thats all they can see you bet those zombies are steering straight at it ;(

Sib,
I have some tape a friend of mine gave that they use on the NYS Thruway. You can see that tape for miles. I often wondered if It would invite unwelcome guests at night when it wasnt in use. I came to the conclusion that, I would much rather remove a destroyed shanty off the ice from vandalism than remove a destroyed shanty and send a sympaty card to the person's family of the snowmobiler that hit it unmarked.

I put retro-reflective tape on just about everything I use. My planer board flags, tip up flags, etc. I even experimented with putting some prismatic retro-reflective tape on some spoon lures(caught Northern). I think its a great idea. I would hate to read that a snowmobileror anyone else died after running into a shack. Retro-reflective sheeting has excellant visibility from 1000' to 1/2 mile depending on what grade sheeting you use. I gave a bunch to a friend to guide him to his tree stand. He couldn't thank me enough. It works great. I use the same tape that we make our barricades and signs with.

I got clobbered a while back by a sled while fishing a river in a 2 man Fish Trap. I had reflective tape on all sides of the unit and a lantern burning inside, I looked like a blue hot air balloon sitting on the ice, so I feel I did my part.
Sleds and ATV's need to except responsibility for there actions and keep there speed DOWN and not race through areas being fished. The moron that hit me was intentionally trying to get close and scare me off the ice because I was in his way.
We discussed this in length after he hit my shack and he found my argument more convincing in the end!
SLEDS BE SAFE & SLOW DOWN!

Lance would you e-mail me at dsamuelson@conpoint.com and suggest how I might purchase several sheets of prismatic reflective tape. Would like to try it on planner boards and tipup flags.
