Do any of you ice anglers have any success on nils master hali jigs? If so what bait are you using on the dropper hook? "TIGHT LINES" Hammer

A Manufacturer that I do business with in Finland says the most popular bait to use with the Hali or any other jig with a similar drop hook set up is a piece of belly meat from a perch walleye.
I've used the belly meat for years on Do-Jiggers and Jig-em-ups for perch, walleyes, white perch and Burp-it (Minnesota for Burbot) :^)

A sliver of belly meat about 1 inch by 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch wide works best for me. Taper it to a point if you have a sharp knife.

Plastics are also good on the Hali spoons. Maybe I'll run into you in western NY somewhere this winter and show you how we rig them .

Thanks for the reply Tony on ice. Just picked ud a couple halis, im anxious to try them out. Going to be heading up to oneida sometime in the near future. Going to try Marion Manor out for a few days. Probably fish the areas you suggestd in one of my earlir posts. We usually go to the bay of guinte for our winter get away. Always did real well there but last couple years have been poor. To many people keep those big eyes up there. I'll drop a line on here when we will be at oneida. If your in the area stop by and try some deer steak and homemade kielbasa. Might even have some homemade wine and cider along for you to try if you want. How is the ice looking around Marion Manor? I use them mainly for smelt but they work well on perch and whitefish, too. Tip them with spikes(maggots) or the head of a small minnow. One thing you can do to improve hooking is to replace the small single hook with a #12 or #14 treble hook. Cut off the single and add a small split ring to attach the treble.

Ice conditions at Oneida lake are looking might grim these days. he center of the lake has opened again and with the 40º temps around here, it won't be freezing anytime soon.
We just have to pray for a long cold winter once this warm spell ends.
Big Bay on the west end of the lake is all that's fishable right now and the bite has slowed down there.
I'll keep you posted on any improvemnts in ice condtions or fishing opportuniies.

The Biat Shop guy is right about changing the small hook on the Hali spoons but there's times when a single spike is all the fish want and that hook works great.
I have a couple rigged with a # 12 Gamakatsu Red Octopus hook with a little bit of yellow calf tail tied on as an attractor and it works great too.
The small trebles work good but when things get hot, you spend too much time trying to get them unburied from the fishes lips !
Sodus Bay is still Hot bt the ice is getting shaky !
I've got the boat on "standby"

You will laugh at this I know, here it is anyway.

I know of some very successful perch fisherman who use, and swear by, raw chicken skin cut into slivers as teaser baits below search rigs such as a Hali.

Ya I know it sounds crazy, but they do very well on them.

You can find bait at www.buyeddyschickenskin.com

No doubt, it's a good bait.
When I was a kid we used to fish the docks in Alexandia ba on the St.Lawrence river for big perch and there were a few native Americans that were there every weekend when we arrived. Got to be good friends with them after a few trips there and they fished with 16 ft cane poles and 2o lb braided dacron line, 2 hooks a sinker and chicken skin !!
I remember them rolling it in salt before putting it on the hook.
They never left without a hefty load of perch.
They got us to try eating raw perch too.
They filleted the smaller perch and only ate those raw. Said the big ones were tough. Just fillet, rinse them in the river and sprinkle with salt and pepper. They were pretty good but thinking back.....I don't think i'll be doing that anymore ! It was 30 years ago .

Hey Hammer,You aren't going to start trying to feed us raw perch after partaking in a few to many beverages now are you? I'll end up with another hotdog incident! RED EYE!
