Y'all,

I'm posting this because of the recent post on a fellow's father having a heart problem. I work in the Atomic City (Los Alamos, NM) at the National Lab there. That's why my moniker is Atomic Eye. The Lab provides us a lot of good info that is health-related. I want to share some with you.

There's a site where you can estimate your risk of heart attack in the next 10 years. You need to have had a blood chemistry workup so you know your total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Also, you need to know your blood pressure, age, and gender. If you don't know any of the above, you might consider seeing a Doc to see what "kind of shape your system is in" (old 60's song?).

If you're about 50 or so, you should also have your Doc order a PSA (Prostrate Specific Antigen) so you can establish if you have prostrate cancer. This test should be done yearly! From what I've read, all males will get it if they don't die of something else sooner!

Here's the site:

http://www.hr.lanl.gov/GoodHealth/

I'm not sure if you'll be able to access it because the National Lab that I work for put a "firewall" up to protect it from hackers. If it doesn't work for you, please reply to my post and if there's enough response, I'll see if our LANL health department will help me figure out a way for you to access the risk calculator.

Hi Atomic Eye,
I work at a lab in the Hanford Area. Nice to see another lab rat on the board. Great post.
I need to get out of the Fat Ba$tard club. I am back in the gym but it is a lot harder than when I use to train for competition.

After having a heart attack sneek up on me less than a mo ago and having stents put in, I am sure I will be able to get some helpful info off the site. Thanks Skeeter

Conchas, Santa Rosa, and Abiquiu. Abiquiu is the closest to me; the recent Walleye Insider says it's supposed to have lots of 6 - 9 #'ers. That's not true or if someone's catching any of them, they're hiding 'em.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I lost a fishing friend last year. Not to death, but to a disabling stroke. He's now 76 and we would often talk about me taking him fishing when he was 100 and I would be 75, but that won't be possible now. For 18 years we went to Canada for a week and caught tons of fish. Mostt importantly, we never ran out of conversation.

There is another guy I know who loves to fish, but could never go because he was always to busy. About 2 years ago I told him that when he was finally laying in his hospital bed with all the tubes hooked up and waiting for the bright light, he wouldn't be wishing he would have worked more, or mowed the lawn more, or built one more house. He's been along more and more since then.

Thanks for the post - I'm only 45 but haven't had the test where the finger goes where the sun doesn't shine yet and it is a good reminder I (need??) to. Wasn't the song "See what condition my condition is in"? Unfortunately some of that stuff is still floating around in my head. Also, don't ever believe the What's Hot section of Walleye Insider. We've got lakes in Colorado that are basically dead sea mudflats that still show up as hot spots with "6-9 pounders common." I'm convinced that they have a stack of these reports that they just recycle on some sort of a schedule. Seems to be little relationship to recent history anyway.

They moved the link that I wanted to post. The link I posted earlier is a good one, but not the right one. Here's the link to the site where you can calculate your risk for heart attack in the next 10 years:

http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/cholesterol/index.htm

Fool around with variables you can put into it, and see how you can reduce your risk of hear attack.

Wally Doc,
You're right. That song had the line "... what condition my condition was in." Thanks for the correction. Now here's something that you may not have understood. The PSA test is a blood chemistry test. It tests for antigens that are produced if you have prostrate cancer. It costs about $80 - 90. It is not the digital exam that should be part of an annual physical.
Yeah, the Walleye Insider keeps pumpimg up Abiquiu. It's fabulously beautiful country. That's why Georgia O'Keefe used to live and paint there. Walleye fishing is good there - but not for big honkers.

Fear No Fish,
You may want to use the risk calculator. If you were once competitive, it's still in your bloodstream. Good luck.
