What does everyone think is the key components to winning early season tournamets?
Lake or river?
If lake, I have had great days trolling around dam areas. Won a tournament 3 yrs ago in 39 degree water doing it.

River, trolling cranks?, what about jigging, or rigging shallow water?
Sorry belter, Im not a river angler. I fish on lake erie, or small
reservoirs in the state of ohio. and yes cranks in cold water works great. If you want to become a tournament fisherman, don't be afraid
to experement with different things. The one thing I do know about river fish is to find current breaks, most of the time thats were you will find the fish.
Fish + Location + Presentation = Success.
Kinda like saying if you know where the winning fish are, and how to catch them, you are going to be hard to beat.
I've always wondered why they make such a DEAL out of stating the obvious.

Two words "Prefish Wisely" do your home work on and off the water...
" Fishing is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope "
in very early spring, when the fish are very close to either side of the spawn, and they are relating to less than six feet of water along shore, it is next to impossible to find them because you can't see them on the electronics, they might not bite trolling cranks, so one is up against pitchin' light jigs to 'em. takes forever! so...while everyone is sleeping, we take the 12 volt spotlight out and cruise the shorelines lookin' for eyes. they will usually be there the next day or two. this way, is not only the fastest way to locate shallow shoreline fish, but then the next day you can fish'em from a distance
without spookin' them. mr. McClelland and i spend many a night out shinin'.
