Purchased a Kachman Hand line reel last spring. It works OK but sometimes the reel gets a back lash. Then I have to clip the wire untangle it and re-rig takes a while. Noticed two others brand of reels for sale, Gold Cap and A&S. Looks like the A&S reel would not have this problem. Any suggestions? Thank You.

WAZ, I've got the A&S, no problems yet. Think we could figure out a way to use these things on the Chain? ;-).

Tried it at the 12 Bridge no luck not enough room. Have you used it a few times? I spoke with a gentleman at lakeside tackle in MI, he told me they all get backlashes and the Kachman is the easiest to straighten out.

The A&S is the cadillac of hand lining reels.
It will last you, and your kids, a few life times of trouble free use.

Only a couple of times so far and no backlashes. I've had visions of using it on the Illinois River, but every time I get a day to scoot down there I end up vertical jigging rather than trying to learn something totally new, getting frustrated, and blowing a day that I know I would have had an otherwise good time :-). I just can't give up vertical jigging down there, the fishing is too good.

The most common cause of the line jumping the spool is getting slack in the line while bringing in the weight. Make sure the reel is keeping up with you when doing this. Also, there are metal tabs thet need to be checked periocically to be sure they are close to the spool so the line cannot jump the spool. I am sure you will be happy with this model.

Jamie do what I did. Didn't bring any rods just the handlines. Regretted it for 3 hours but then got the hang of it and had a blast.
If you need company someday give me a buzz.

YOU SIR are a BRAVE MAN! I'd get the shakes around Libertyville knowing that I had a boat in tow without a rod in the locker. If I'm heading down I'll give you a shout.

Take Care,

Jamie

I think his sanity is seriously in question. First he goes fishing without his rods (ON PURPOSE!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!) and then he volunteers to get in a boat with you for who knows how many hours of Handlining. He can't be right in the head. And you're encouraging him! How right are you? (lol.Good Luck guys)

Steve, If I could teach you anything in my lifetime, I will die a happy man. You have shown me much more than I could ever show you. Thanks for taking Nick and I out on LOTW years ago and for putting me on the fish needed to win that amateur a boat on Mille Lacs at the PWT tournament when I was so sick. I will never forget that.

I can teach you to handline and you probably will like it. anytime we are on a river together, look me up.

Your Friend,
Bruce

Hey Steve,
I'll be up to Mille Lacs twice this year (MWC&Wacker), so if you want to get together for a day on a river, just let me know. It would be an honor and a privledge to show you how to handline..;-)

thanks for the invite...see ya at mighty mille lacs. (by the sounds of things, you might want to wear a helmet, shoulder pads and have your boat armored. ha! ha!)
hand lining...all i need is more stuff in the truck and boat. tough to teach an old dog new tricks, ya know.
my old mwc partner, wally hilgenberg, tried to get me to hand line in a major flood situation on the illinois river in '88. he learned how and got the stuff when he played for the detroit lions. of course, i gave in to him just for my safety sake. so as i pouted, assuming he was wasting our time, (i tried to fish with 3/4oz. jigs), he hooked the only bite we had in two days. put us in the money...but noooooo...
i wouldn't learn!
again, thanks for the invite, juls and to you too, mr. chairman.

THE ONLY FISHING THAT I DO IS HANDLINEING. I HAVE NEVER HAD A BACKLASH. I WOULD THINK THAT YOU ARE BRINGING THE LINE IN TOO FAST OR YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TENSION ON THE SPRING. I HAVE BOTH THE GOLD CAP AND A & S REELS. THE A & S IS THE BEST ON THE MARKET. I USE 90# NON- COATED WIRE AND 30# MASON LEADER MATERIAL FOR MY LEADS. THE LEADS I USE ARE 15' AND 30'. THE LEAD WEIGHT IN 5MPH CURRENT IS 20 OZ. IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT I CAN HELP YOU OUT WITH, LET ME KNOW. YOU CAN GET ME AT thelipkes@aol.com. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT.
