My main motor is 125 Merc. thinking about getting a kicker for trolling and I think I would prefer a tiller as a kicker, I have been told you will have much better boat control with a kicker. Just looking for some advice. Also if I go with a kicker does anyone know if you can purchase an extension for the handle and throttle so it can be controlled from a little farther forward. Thanks.

C.L.,

This all depends on the type of fishing you are planning to do. I assume you are looking for slower trolling speeds than can be attained from the big motor. Additionally, for trolling weedbeds, underwater shelves/contours, creek channels, backtrolling, etc. In that case you are correct - you will get better boat control with a kicker especially if used in the tiller fashion. Kickers are a God-send if your big motor dies on you in the middle of nowhere, too. It's something to think about.

If you need EXTREME boat control then a bow mount electric trolling motor is the best for this type of fishing. Most of us here at WC have three motors on the boats - Main, Kicker and Electric. However, we also know that not everyone can afford all three toys.

Good luck in your search!

Whoa! There goes a "1000"!

Thanks for your help Ranger, do you know about the extension arms I mentioned?

You'll love having a kicker. Yes, there are all kinds of options for controlling the kicker-- as simple as a couple of feet of 1-1/4" flared PVC pipe slipped over the handle, jointed telescopic extensions from Cabelas/BassPro, steering linkage to your big motor, or the ultimate, a TR-1 autopilot with remote steering and throttle control. I'd start out simple with a jointed extension handle (or nothing at all) until you're familiar with it and sure what you want. I just use mine hands-on most of the time, because it gives me quicker response while trolling in river currents. But if I'm trolling in slack water without much wind, sometimes I'll steer with the big motor and take it easy.
