I'm seriously considering purchasing my first Loomis rod. Because of the substantial price, I want an all around rod for jigging and light rigging. The models I'm considering are the SJR782 and SJR 722 in the IMX or GLX. For those of you who have fished with Loomis, what is your opinion and should I be considering any other models or brands.

My favorite rods are my 722s. I have both GLX and IMX. Man , even the GLX has more feel than anything I ever had prior.

Is the GLX worth spending the extra $100 on? Are there any less expensive places to buy other than Reeds, Bass Pro & Cabelas?

GLoomis are a fixed price item - same non-discounted price wherever you buy them. I have a GLX 722 - it is awesome - great sensitivity and it has enough backbone that I have landed substantial pike and muskie without being overmatched. PS: Landed the pike and muskie because I was using Power Pro line and avoided the dreaded "bite off".

I have made and used both rods. I cant say the GLX is a whole third better, and actually like my IMX's better.
I think the GLX is a bit more sensetive and yes its lighter, but I dont think it has the hook setting power the IMX has.

i won't name companies but...some of the other rod 'names' are made by loomis or have virutally the same qualities. the 'loomis' name as in many product images, costs lots. could some of the cabella's blanks come from the same building as the loomis blanks... now, i'm not knockin' loomis. your question was about value and if it's worth it.
me...i'd buy a 'cheaper name' and put the money where it might actually make a difference. and as long as we're on the subject of rods, i'll earn my keep and suggest you look at www.wristsaverrods.com

The SJR 782 GLX would be the one I'd have if I could only have one. You'll be amazed how many situations it will handle. Small cranks, plastics, even light bottom bouncers. Probably their most versatile rod. Excellent choice. Will do much more work than the lure range would suggest.
My advise to any first time Loomis buyer is to buy the rod that they'll be able to take most often. You'd be surprised how often that is something they forget to take into account.
Good luck, and beware.... they are like potato chips, you can't stop at just one.

I've bought GLoomis rods and paid the big bucks for them. A friend of mine has been making Loomis rods with the blanks. It is the only way to go. Much cheaper for the exact same product. If your interested e-mail me arnie@info-link.net and I can hook you up with him.

ETT and others. Thanks for your comments. Because I want my first Loomis to cover as many fishing situations as possible, I'm leaning heavily towards the SJR782 IMX. I have plenty of 6' rods and the 782 will cover both jigging and rigging at 6'6". The guys at Scheels Sports have their own name brand rods made with Loomis blanks. However, they don't have the quality handle components and Loomis look. They're regularly $99 on sale for $69. Also, they are heavier rods, rated for 10-20 lb. test, heavier than I like to use. Anybody have any experience with the Scheels rods with Loomis blanks?
Just as a side note, Reeds has their Loomis rods priced slightly lower the the other stores, but Bass Pro's new catalog offers a discount of $15 for purchases over $125. I'm assuming this applies to Loomis rods also. This appears to make them the lowest cost solution at this point.

Hogslammer...I would imagine you have hefted these rods...right?
If not... go grab hold of a couple and see what you think before you buy. No way would I spend money on a rod without feeling it, first.
I really love to go to stores where they have a slew of nice rods and check them out, compare them, etc. before I buy.

T-Mac, I've hefted quite a few Loomis rods and have even attached my exact reel to the top 4 rods I was interested in. I don't want to make a $200 or $300 mistake, that's why I'm asking for other people's opinions who have used these rods. Thank's again for everyone's input.

Terri says hi, and Happy B-day to you too! (well, soon anyway)
I ended up taking her to a play at Pheasant Run. Gosh, I hope I still know how to fish after all this culture...

I just picked up a SJR722IMX last fall, for jig's from 3/8 to 1/2 oz. and light rigging it's great. Below 3/8 oz. I think the 721 would be a better rod. I own 3 Loomis rod's and love them all, well worth the extra money.

My IMX SJR 782 is my favorite rod -- I use it mostly for jigging but also for bass fishing (and caught a few steelhead on it accidentally). I think it's the most versatile of my spinning rods. I don't think it would be my first choice for rigging, though-- the action is a little too fast, and you're not going to see a lot of tip action. (You'll sure feel every tic, though.)

You have heard many opinions here, and most are from people with much walleye experience. The post about being like potato chips is very close to the truth! I started with one, and they continue to grow all the time.
I think you might prefer a "1" power rod versus a "2" power if you are thinking of doing any rigging with it.
Yes, Steve is correct, G. Loomis has made blanks for other companies, but I don't think they are the same blanks that G. Loomis uses in makng their own rods.
Good Luck with your decision, during winter that's half the fun, trying, asking, and thinking about open water fishing!

Loomis rods are alright but I really don't care that much for them. I bought 2 loomis and 2 St. Croix and now am going to all Croix including trolling rods. I sold the one loomis and if anyone wants to make me and offer I'll sell the other one. Its a GL3--PR844S. IMHO the St. Croix Legend Elite can't be beat. Not trying to bash--everyone has their own opinion and preference and this is just mine.

I prefer the 782 myself. In the IMX.
One thing that hasn't been brought up when everyone is talking price is Loomis' warranty. Its about the best in the business. If you opt for the express all you have to do is pay $50 and you will have a new rod at your door in TWO DAYS.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have!

I have four rods my newest and favorite of the four loomis is a wjr741 it is the walley series in a 6'2 light. a little more strength in the rod than imx due to different resins(while lindy rigging last summer in Platte I pulled in a 43" northern took awhile though). Iether way you go I would not go higher than a 2power rating you will gain aloot in senativity, just something to consider.

I have fished a light St.Croix but thought the elite was about the same feel and sensitivty as imx not glx a little heavier in the butt and stiffer all around, perhaps its just due to fishing more with loomis still was a great rod though.
