Finicky fish factory ???'s

This is the second year I've been using them - aside from the fact they are kind of bulky I really like them.

I have noticed that the jigging motion seems to take the life out of the shiners much quicker than if they were rigged on a regular tip-up. Would chubs hold up better?

I've tried just using the jigging motion for a few minutes each half hour - seems to help. Any other suggestions? Do any of you use dead smelt with these machines?
