I will be making my first trip to LOTW the first weekend in June. We are staying on the Minnesota side just out of Baudette. If anyone could give pointers on what has worked well in the past during this time of the year I'd appreciate it a ton as we only have four days to fish when we're there. thank you - erik

LAST EDITED ON May-10-00 AT 03:13PM (CST)[p]So far the temps have remained cool and may continue for the remainder of May...but time will tell. If water temps continue to climb at this slow pace, you will find the 'eyes near the river (Rainey) and over by Zipple Bay. The islands (Twin and Pine) will hold good numbers off its wind blown edges and rocky shores. If the water temps climb quickly, then the 'eyes will move to the humps and flats out in the bays. At that point your best bet is to talk with the bait store in town and some of the charters to see where they have been doing well. Get a GPS and some GOOD maps. This side of the lake is BIG and FLAT with very subtle structure. If you can find the slight bowl or hump that is holding fish...mark it and fish hard.

Depending on your boat size and weather, shoot west to 16 Mile Reef or Arneson's Reef. You will need a GPS and a map with the coordinates for these too. These two spots are very productive in warmer weather, once located. Find the quick drop offs and jig or drag spinners. Depth is 30-10 feet on both of these reefs.

One very important factor on Lake of the Woods. WEATHER! It can whip up in no time and that is a very bid lake with very little shelter on the US side for quick retreats. I would recomend a prortable weather AND VHS radio if you plan to wonder far from your dock. Be sure to show someone on shore where you are heading and when you think your ETR will be and be sure you have a good map of that shoreline. Although this side of the lake is mostly sand, there are several boat sinking rocks near shore between Baudette and Warroad, as well as some nasty shallow sand bars that stretch for 5-10 miles over by Twin Islands. But, those bars are also great to fishing off when the wind has been blowing the bait around.

Other then that, use your head and follow your instincts. This lake can produce some lunkers if you do your homework.

Thank you Aqua -
We run an 18 foot aluminum boat with enough HP to help get us off the lake if we see trouble coming, and we have a good GPS units, but no radio. Do you or anyone have suggestions on brands or models, keeping in mind that it would probably only be used once or twice a year as most of the bodies of water we fish are small.
thanks again for all the fishing tips...erik
