We are making plans now to head down to Biloxi, MS and New Orleans, LA in mid March to visit our Air Guardsman. I want to take him, his twin brother and my daughter out on a chartered fishing trip for a half day.
That said, The wife is a little shell shocked at some of the prices I have found. At $500+ I HAVE to agree.
Do any of you have any suggestions, charters or alternatives that would get the boys/girl and I out on the water for a day of fishing with someone that knows the area? I am open to any type of fishing but would prefer light tackle for Specs, Reds, etc.
No hurry, just looking to line it up in advance so that the wife can't change her mind later. <yeah!>

I had breakfast with a friend of mine last week that told me about his trip to Biloxi. He towed his 18' Princecraft down there and had a great time fishing sharks just off the Gulf side of the island near the old fort. He said there were only two other boats in the area and one of them was also from northern Illinois. He rinsed the boat and trailer down w/ fresh water when he left and had no problems. Things have changed a lot since I was there in '65 w/ the Air Force....you need a license for salt water....and he was checked !!

Yeah, I saw a list of all the species that are available and shark look interesting, but I would rather stay a little closer to shore and fish the lighter tackle a little longer. Most 1/2 day trips do not wonder far from the docks. Speckled & white trout and Flounder would be a real blast. Same with the cobia and spanish mackerel. They fish them in close and out by the oil rigs. I might get a chance to fly fish for some of the redfish in the bay as well. We'll see how tollerent moma is.
Not enough time to drive down, but thanks for the idea. MN to MS would take us about 2 days one way. With 6 days available, flying is the only way.

Aquaman, I was down there 2 years ago and took my son-inlaw on a full day charter on one of the head boats just east of Baluxi and west of the Balbiaje casino. Follow road that goes along the Ocean beach front east and you will run into the places where the head boats are, its about half mile before casino. I think cost me 160.00 for the both of us and we caught a lot of ocean catfish, look like they have wings and a lot of small sharks and a hammer head had a blast. Check around I did, only wish I could remember the name of the charter for ya...redrnger...feel the tug
My company represents over 125 outfitters including a couple good charters out of New Orleans. Charter that I would recommend is $475 including out of state license, lunch and soft drinks, bait and tackle and fish cleaning and packing.
Like they say down there, we don't go fishin', we go catchen.
If you would like info on this outfitter, email your address to goupille@aol.com.

Give Mike Lane's website a try. www.rodnreel.com The report section will let you know how the fishin' is going and several guides post reports there on a daily basis. I would suggest you try Frank Moore
(Fishing with the King) or Brian Epstein (transplanted New Jersey boy who won't go home). Either of these guys will show you a good time. Be sure to check out the photo section of the website. Good luck..

A-Man:
I fish Biloxi regularly! My buddy Mike Brackin of Breakaway Charters would take you out, and generally negotiates a great rate. He says the tourism/fishing scene right now is very slow there, so you might do better than what you've been quoted. You can reach Mike at 228/341-0848. Tell him his buddy Rich in Arkansas sent you!
Another person to try is Scott Simpson of Impulsive Charters in Long Beach/Pass Christian, five miles west of Biloxi. As far as I'm concerned, he is "Mr. Speckled Trout" for that area. He also was the charter captain for a client who just set the Mississippi record for tarpon-167 lbs! Call Scott at 228/452-7117, pager: 228/880-5313.
If you fly fish, call Richard at Chandeleur Outfitters in Ocean Springs, just east of Biloxi. He can only take two fishermen at a time in his flats boat, but I think you can go all day for under $300 for two people. http://www.chandeleuroutfitters.com
If I wasn't headed down there for the New Orleans Boat Show Feb. 20, I'd be jealous. Mike and I will be headed out to fish while I am staying on the coast.
Good luck!
