trolling plates

I have a 115 Johnson that the slowest trolling speed is 3 mph. Would it be wise to invest in a trolling plate or add another battery for my electric trolling motor for extended trolling.(12 volt system) Any info on trolling plates or extended trolling systems would be helpful.
