Wile E, To make it short and sweet ;-)
water has a max density of 39.2 degrees F. Which ever layer of water, either (surface or bottom) is closer to this temp., this water will sink to the bottom. Usually Spring and Fall are most common times of turnover. The surface water tends to sink in the Fall as it becomes cooler than that of the bottom layer. In the Spring the the surface tends to warm up to a temp closer to 39.2 degrees than that of the bottom, forcing the bottom layer of water up and the surface layer down.

What is it when people say that the lake turned over? I have my thoughts but I don't know forsure. For example last year when we went to our little lake here in Mn. the day I put my boat in the water (July 20th) the water temp was 81 which is normal for the time of year.In the past I've got alot of walleyes that time of the year on that lake. The air temp stayed the same all week but the water temp went down every day about 2 degrees. The water got dirty and we didn't catch anything till the 8th day after the water temp stayed at 74degrees for 2 days. Did I get the turnover or not? Do fish stop biting during this Turn over time. And why does a lake do that? A simple explanation will be good You know short-sweet- and to the point. Thanks Wile E
