You know what? After thinking long and hard about this question I have come up with an answer. I asked myself first, what kind of conditions do fish live in, inhospitable?, dog eat dog? the strong survive?......all of the above!!! If you fight them long and hard....revive them! If it is a short battle....throw them back. I do not advocate abusing fish but come on...these kid cloves that TV personalities show us is all B.S. Treat them ok and throw them back. They will survive. I am not talking about the ones that have swallowed your hook down to the gullet, but your every day Walleye. I have caught over 2000 in my lifetime and saw only three (3) floating minutes later from tough fights! I hate this PC world! A fish is a fish! Plane and simple. Just my 2 cents.

I take a little more time with the larger fish I think it takes longer for them to recover after the fight. One thing if I'm not planning to keep a couple to eat I release all my fish right away. In other words I don't wait till the end of the day and throw them back because I don't feel much like cleaning them. During tournaments on hot days when surface temps are high I plug my livewells and fill with water prior to leaving the launch I add one block of ice to cool the water. You don't want the water too cold this will shock the fish also. Then I won't add any water for the rest of the day I just recirculate the water and use a keep alive infuser. This has worked very well for me. Also I will not go through the gills to remove a hook. I cut the line if there is any dought I will hurt the fish. The hooks will rust away in a short amount of time. Fizzing the fish is another topic I don't like to do it but sometimes you have to when pulling fish from deep water. I was told that clipping small snap weights on the underside of the fish in your livewell works as well as fizzing. I have tried this and the success rate has been about 60% Hope this helps. GOOD FISHING!
