Dropper lines

I was out yesterday and found a school holding tight to the bottom - nothing I tried, jigging, tip-up, fatheads, shiners would do nothing but get a casual look.

I was in about 30 FOW and decided to try a Salmo with a 2" dropper - is this too deep for a dropper line - kept tangling over the top of the Chubby. What is the secret to rigging the "loop" knot to the bottom of the lure, or is thirty feet too deep?
