I'm drooling about getting a TR1 gold for my Honda 15hp 4 stroke. Does anybody have anything good or bad to say about these gems? How hard are they to set up? Thanks

I have used the TR-1 for several years and the newer models have all the improvements needed for long life. I have one on a '96, 23' Pro-Line and have not touched it for a couple of years. It steers in rough weather and installation is fairly easy. The factory has always bent over backwards to correct any problems.
Get the Tach and Throttle for the unit too. It is an awsome package.

I purchased my unit in the spring of 1996. I have it installed on a 21' smokercraft with a 9.9 HT yamaha. The installation went smoothlyand their support is great. I had a problem one year on a trip to Lake Michigan and the part was sent overnight. They had me back fishing the next day. The unit still worked, just an occasional hickup. I haven't had a problem since. I wouldn't want to be without the TR-1. I second the previous post about auto-throttle and tach.
Hookem, The TR-1 Gold is really a wonderful unit. There are many things that you can do with it such as throttling up or down, hooking it into you GPS for exact locations, "S" trolling, turning port or starboard, all by using your thumb. Drop me an e-mail with your address and I'll send you some literature. Bo #582

I have been running the TR1 for 4 years and find it very dependable. When landing fish in rough water, it keeps you on course and gives you time to rig and fish with out having to steer the boat. Good product, you'll enjoy it.

The best investment that I ever made!! other than my Lund!!!! I have had mine since "97" not one problem. Can't emagine fishin without it! It's that awesome.
I cannot recommend the TR-1 highly enough. I've had one on my 20' Pro-Elite for 4 years now and can't imagine being without it. The unit does everything as advertised. I've had two minor problems over the years and both times the company has overnighted me the parts with no questions asked. The unit really shines when the weather is rough and you don't have a lot of hands to help you out. I would love to upgrade to the new Gold Series but can't justify giving up my 4-year old unit. Buy the TR-1 . . . you will love it!

Have had the TR-1 w/Autopilot for 3 seasons and love it. Only a problem early on, but it was taken care of. Get the tach with it. I'm sure the gold is even better.
You may want to take a look at a similar product made by Panther. I believe it only has steering control (no throttle or autopilot). The big advantage is its less $$ if you want to sacrfice options.

I had the old model for three years and had only one problem, they fixed it at no charge then I just upgraded to the gold and it works twice as good as the old one. I installed it myself. The installation is very simular to the old one but the gold unit has a fairly complex tuning process the first time your on the water. Like everyone else, I would not want to troll without it - its like having a extra hand onboard to do the steering. I have installed two of the gold units and on both they have had a problem with leaking fluid from the reservor, it was a Oring out of place on both unit which I fixed myself. I called Nautamatics about this.

Hookem, You can e-mail me at walleeeye@aol.com. Hope to hear from you. Tight lines, Bo #582
When the TR-1 is rigged with the kicker can you somehow rig it to the main engine to help with steering. I find at times I have to turn the main engine to help the kicker with turns. Or should I trim up the main engine.
Can the TR1 be used if you have the kicker tied to the main motor or does the kicker have to be disconnected and independent of the big motor??

No., It uses adjusments too often, you would mess up the pump.
Question to others thou.
Anybody tried disconnecting the compass and does it hold a steady
motor position, with a remote steering.(stays in one position when let go) This is something I will try working on next summmer, backtrolling my 9.9HP?

Disconnected, It will not turn your wheel, but if the autopilot is off you could use just the remote throttle and connect the rod for steering. I've been trying to get a special bracket made for my 97 model tr-1 for just this situation.
