Lake Shelbyville Next Stop for Illinois Region of Gander Mountain GNWC
By Steve Weisman
GNWC Publicity Director
The next stop for the Illinois Region of the Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC) will be Lake Shelbyville on Sunday, May 2. Gander Mountain GNWC Executive Director Bernie Barringer notes, "Our first tournament was at Spring Valley in late March, so I know that the Illinois teams have been waiting a long time for their second tournament."
Barringer says, "Shelbyville is off the beaten path when it comes to the walleye tournament world. However, it is a great walleye fishery and we are trying to build interest in walleye fishing in this area by holding a tournament here. I believe Shelbyville has the potential to produce some big catches, and
anyone interested in watching the weigh-in and learning how some of the
state's serious walleye anglers unravel the mysteries of Shelbyville
walleyes will definitely not want to miss the weigh-in. Tournament anglers
will tell-all about how, when and where they caught the winning fish."
Barringer continued, "Any local anglers who are interested in competing in the event are more than welcome to jump in and take a crack at the $1000 first place. Plus, if they do well, they have a chance to advance to the state walleye championship in August."
Heading into this second tournament, the team of Mike Actis and Mike Stuckert from Spring Valley is the leading team in the race for the Illinois Region Team of the Year.
Openings still exist for the Shelbyville qualifier and Barringer encourages interested anglers to contact him at 1-800-890-FISH (3474), or email the GNWC at info@walleyecup.com. The tournament director will have the trailer at the Dam West area from 6-8 p.m. the evening before the tournament to take late entries and answer questions
Teams are to meet at the Dam West are the morning of the tournament for registration and mandatory boat check. Host bait shop is Spillway Bait.
Take-off is at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in commencing at 3 p.m. sharp. "We certainly encourage people will turn out for the weigh-in. It's not only exciting seeing the baskets of fish that the teams bring in, but also very informative as the teams describe the presentations that worked best during the tournament."
Title Sponsor for the GNWC is Gander Mountain with other major national sponsors including Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, the Sportsman Channel, Berkley, Aqua Innovations, YoNet Folding Nets by AMFYOYO, VIB"E" Lure Company, TowTector Shield and UpNorth Outdoors.com.
