: Good Old Fashoined Marabou Jigs
Nate W. 01-22-2002, 11:59 AM Maybe I'm the only one and maybe I should get with the times, but it always seems I can coax a fish or two more with a minnow-tipped ordinary marabou jig. The trouble is you can't find an "ordinary" marabou jig anywhere. It used to be you didn't go out on the water with out a couple dozen in each color, what happened? The only place carrying them anymore seems to be Cabela's. Am I already an "old timer" at age 37? Geez! I hope not!
Does anyone out there know where I can get Bulk marabou jigs? Thanks in advance. If you just want to let me know that I am not alone, thanks there too!
Neal/CO 01-22-2002, 12:11 PM They are very simple to tie if you buy the heads and marabou in bulk. Plus you can experiment with different color combo's that you would never find at the store!
stewart 01-22-2002, 01:24 PM I'll agree with Neal. Just need thread, bobbin(thread holder), chenille, marabou, and hooks. You can make a ton for cheap.

i've been tying a few dozen a day, got a lot of colors chenille, maribou, jigs, etc. i'm just outside of blue river. mosty panfish sizes, but may expand if i can find a market for bigger jigs. gearjammer387@gmail.com
Nate,
With the right jig and with the right bite, you can easily out fish a minnow tipped Marabou jig, by just using a bare non tipped Marabou jig. On a hot bite, adding a minnow is unnecessary and just takes away time from fishing.

Boy howdy, I use those to death exactly what you are saying. My Walmart has them for a $1.49 a dozen, I literally have a pocket of my tackle box full of them in every color in 1/4 oz, 1/8 oz and 1/16 oz. I tend to get chart and white mostly but I have blue and white, red head black body yellow tail, pink, white and pink. Well you get the idea.
I have tied them too. But during the winter I walk over to walmart for lunch look at the stuff and buy jigs, lots of jigs. When crappie fishing I lose them by the dozens. ;)
Basically this deal:

Now hand tied jigs are a lot more expensive to buy. I have some of those but they are like buying flies like the superior jigs made by Matthew Carroll (jigum jigs) 972 754-1698, doesn't have a web site at the moment.
Dabluz 02-14-2012, 12:38 PM If you want a decent marabou jig, you will have to tie them yourself or buy them from somebody who uses quality jigs.
I'm an old timer from the days when plastic doodads did not exist on jigs. The only jigs available were marabou jigs. I didn't have a penchant for hair jigs in those days because marabou was the cat's meow in those days. No need for any bait. One year, I added part of a nightcrawler on the marabou jig and the walleye loved it.
The best jigs in those days were Allen's Jigs. I still have a couple but don't dare use them. Those jigs had a gold colour fine wire hook that would straighten out if you used good 8 or 10 lb test line.
Plastic made marabou almost obsolete because you don't have the expense of a labour force to tie the marabou to the jig. On top of that, marabou costs more than plastic. I tried plastic on jigs and I guess I just don't have the talent for it because I have much better results with marabou or just a naked jig with part of a nightcrawler. I have boxes of plastic baits and they don't inspire me in the least bit. Maybe my very slow style of bouncing or walking a jig along the bottom does not allow the plastic to move very much. With marabou, even in still water, the fibers move.
Yes....plastic with an added bait may work but the hook is too loaded to get consitent hook ups.
I like the idea that plastic is so popular....it means more walleye for me.
I'm a fly tyer so whipping on a couple of bunches of marabou or hair on a jig is a whiz for me. I do a lot of jigs for friends too.
My favourite colours by far are all black, all white, yellow with a streak of black in the middle and black with a streak of lime green in the middle. Be careful of the yellow ones because the pike really love those.
Bobber Down 02-14-2012, 03:12 PM .Do yourself a favor and check out haggerty lures. Bill ties an awesome jig and will custom tie any color or combo you can think of. Kurt
eriksat1 02-14-2012, 03:20 PM I started making my own also for crappie, it is very hard to find the jig size and hook size and style hook you want, then also find the color head and color maribou combination. After the initial lay out I can make a years worth for a few bucks and a couple of hours and have exactly what I want. Plus the extra satisfaction you get from catching fish on something you made.
Gary Korsgaden 02-14-2012, 04:52 PM 1/16 oz Bass Buster Jigs were some of the best jigs I ever fished. When I saw them become more and difficult to get, I stocked up buying dozens of cards. I just looked at one of the cards and see I paid .25 for a great quality maribou jig. Whitehead with yellow body the best. I agree with REW a maribou jig fished properly will out fish any rubber jig.
gearjammer387 02-14-2012, 05:58 PM i've got a wide variety of color schemes & jig sizes, can sell them in quantity

NathanH 02-14-2012, 06:33 PM Hows the quality of the Marabou Wallmart, Bass Pro or Cabelas jigs?

I don't tie a body to my jigs. I add the marabou right behind the head of the jig. I don't let the tips of the marabou get too far past the hook.
Walleye Queen 02-22-2012, 07:22 PM You can get all of this stuff fairly cheap on Jann's netcraft website. I pulled my biggest Walleye up on a Orange/chartreuse jig. I am no professional fisherwoman but when I seen that bad boy surface I was giddy as a school girl on a snow day....and I almost took a stinger hook to the forehead to catch that beastly 22 incher using my trusty pink and black (breast cancer awareness) shakespere rod and reel.

Try to tell that to a lot of guys I sometimes fish with. They are convinced that if they don't have minnows before they go out, they will get skunked. Some even bail if no minnows are available.
I tie marabou jigs for steelhead, and use a small amount of chenille for scent use.Sometime an advantage if the water is dirty.
gearjammer387 03-06-2012, 10:45 PM no walmart or cabela's chinese maribou, i get my stuff from chuck & debs or fish usa.
