I know that this has been addressed and I have read the answers.

The problem I have is that I am unable to tie the proper knot that splices the leadcore to the mono leader. I can not get an inch of the lead core stripped from the outer sheathing. This is driving me nuts and the overhand knots are not an answer. I use Kerplunk 18LB.

Should I try another brand or what do you suggest?

I just spooled several reels with the same stuff with no problem. Possibly try holding lead with tweezers while sliding cover back? Use a blood knot.

Use the Uni-to-Uni knot.

Uni to Uni knot same as blood knot, one other option is the nail knot. Ask a flyfisherman how to tie nail knot.

Actually they are not the same. I find the uni to uni knot easier to tie and extremely reliable. Dean has a picture of both on his ever-useful web site: http://www.cliftond.com/Knot.htm

Strip about 4-5 inches of lead from the nylon outer layer, tie a loose overhand knot in the nylon, run you mono inside the core all the way to the lead and cinch it up tight and you are set. I know it sounds weird but it works and it is a smooth connection no catching in the rod guides.

If you really wanna make things easier on yourself just use a small barrell swivel and tie the lead to that and then your leader to that also.Just make sure the barrell swivel is small enough to pass threw the guides.Ive been tieing my leadcore for a few years and last year i started useing the barrell swivel.....gotta tell you WAY easier and a stronger connection.Good Luck,Kdog

what is the size and lb. test rating of the swivels you are using. Something that small scares me. We're hauling in 8 to 10 lb.ers regularly in our lake and can't risk losing one to broken equipment failures. Big Fish Pot is $400 to $500 and I wouldn't want to lose it to a swivel just for convenience of tieing. Besides,,, Uni-to-Uni knot goes thru the guides easily too and is easy to tie.

Its not easy but once you do it one time, you have got it. Use a very sharp scissors to cut off the end of your line. A dull scissors or a tweezers will mushroom the end of the lead, making it catch when you try to pull the dacron back. Run the line through your hands a couple of times to take out any kinks or memory. Then, hold the line in one hand with about 2 inches of line sticking out of your hand. Very gently, without bending the line, use your thumb and index finger to pinch the dacron and slide it back. As soon as you expose a little of the lead, pinch down on the line, let go with the hand you were holding the line in and reach around and grab the tip of the lead. With your other hand, use light pressure to slide the dacron back. Once you figure out the correct amount of pressure to use when sliding the dacron back, you will have it figured out. Hope this is not too tough to understand. Its much easier to show someone. Good luck!!

You can strip the lead from the dacron very easily by pulling about 4 or 5 inches of the leadcore between your forefinger and thumbnail a dozen times or so. This will seperate the dacron from the lead. Then simply push back the dacron and clip off lead. Next, tie in your mono using a uni-knot. The result is a strong, small knot that slides easly through your rod guides.

The thumbnail trick worked! How many seasons do you guys use your lead core? I'm afraid to tell you how old mine is you wouldn't believe it.

Thanks for the tip!
