I'm going to Big Lake Winnie around the first of june this year for the first time. I've never been to this lake before but heard it's good. I'm looking for suggestions on how to fish this lake for walleye. Is leadheading always the best option?

I was there later in the summer a few years ago, and caught lots of walleye around sunset by trolling along the Bowen Flats. The jig/rig fishermen weren't doing very well that evening. It's nothing new, just a technique/time of day that works well on Ottertail Lake as well. Bottom bouncers with bait or Rapalas both work well. Guides are plentiful, resort and campground operators will give good advice.

We stayed at Bowens campground for most of a week. I'd like to recommend them, their campground and cabins, and their location on the lake. If the wind is up, your boat is actually docked on Cut Foot Sioux lake, and there is access to the string of Little Cut Foot Sioux lakes, which are really small and protected from the wind and contain lots of panfish.

I've got a place on Winnie. June is a GREAT month for fishing. Depends on how warm the water is but I prefer fishing the main bars. Jig & minnow or live bait rig with leeches, minnow, or crawler. Another resort is Nodak's -- its on the south end. Good cabins, well equipped. Great harbor. If family is going along -- they've got a playground for the kids and a heated pool. I was at Williams Narrows Resort on Cut Foot Sioux a couple of years ago. The cabins were being updated at that time and if the owners kept up the work the cabins should all be in great shape now. We were there in late September and the wind was wicked. Being on Cut Foot Sioux saved the trip. One resort on Winnie didn't have a boat that could get out due to the wind and waves. The guys staying there had to trailer to the other side of the lake.
