Any of the Shimano reels in the 1000 size with the unlimited anti-reverse will make good vertical jigging reels. I use a 2000 symetre for my ice jigging rod, and though it's a little bit big, it's a great reel with a good drag. Matter of fact, I landed a 9 pound pike on 4 pound line last weekend while perch fishing with it. I like the 1000 or 2000 spirex for casting jigs too, like for working shorelines or trees.

Sedonna's anybody? Symetre is a better reel but the others not bad either. Some of the older model graphite body reels with rubber caps and handles at this time of the year are slick and ice free.

I love my 1000 Stradic, I also have a couple (6) 2000 Symetres for my clients to use, and after two years of tough use, they are still in perfect working condition. Shimano makes a great product.

For the money you should look at Shimano Sahara reels.

I would opt for the Shakespeare Catera. Outdoor Life rated it last year as one of the best reels available. Rec Retail about $40. Dick's Sporting Goods sells it for $29.99.

Ditto on the Sahara...the only reason why I don't use it much anymore is my fiancee bought me a stradic for my b-day last year. Not sure how much they cost in the states, but expensive up here (only sustain and stella cost more) Worth every penny though. Sahara is also a great reel for the price though....(:

My wife and I both like the Shakespeare Catera. We also use it as a bottom bouncer reel. It has a very nice feel, is smooth as silk, and locks instantly.
I've got a few of the Shimano 1000s that are going into my garage sale this summer.

This is another vote for the Shakespeare Catera. I got a great deal on my first one from the company rep. and I have gone out and bought 4 more. I have both sizes and love them. Instant anti-reverse and smoooooth drags. These $30 reels are better (IMHO)than most $50 reels. I will probably replace al my Shimanos this spring with the Cateras.
