Monday Oct 3, 2005 – 3rd Annual Huron Booster Club Walleye Tournament Results

Walleye Tournament raises over $1605 for the Huron Schools Athletic Booster Club and pays out over $3605 to the anglers. In our three year history we have donated $7,050 to the Huron Schools Athletic Booster Club, and THANKS to generous contributions from Huron area businesses we have been able to pay out $11,920 to the anglers that have supported this fundraiser.

Team Huckleberry wins $2050 during a tough bite on Lake Erie. The team of Boyd Martin, Ray Sterk, Brett Flaczynski, Chris Woods, and Denny Braun won the 3rd annual Huron Schools Athletic Booster Club Walleye Tournament held Saturday Oct 1 in Huron Ohio. The team was one of several teams that brought a tournament limit of 5 walleye to the scales. Their winning weight of 11.05 pounds included the 4.8 pound big fish of the tournament. The first place payout was $1050 with an additional $1000 for the big fish.

Second place went to the team of Mike Zaborski, Charles Robinson, and Andrew Purtee for $600 with an additional $380 for the 2nd largest walleye of the tournament weighing in at 3.9 pounds that was part of their 10.75 pound basket of 5 walleye.

Pete Dix, Joe Revelle and Ken Turner teamed up for a third place finish of 8.95 pounds for a $350 payout.

Captain Ray Vargo’s Erie Therapy team of Don Andress, Bob Tolliver and Jim Forbes finished in 4th place for a $225 payout bringing 8.45 pounds to the scales.

Most of the teams ran spoons by Michigan Stinger or Silver Streak behind Dipsey Divers or Jet Divers and fished off of the West side of the Vermilion Sand Bar. Higher water temperatures than normal have a lot of the bigger fish still coming back from their summer trek to the East. Vargo’s Erie Therapy team won the inaugural event in 2003 with a 5 fish limit topping 47 pounds. It appears it will be a few more weeks until catches like that happen in the Huron, Vermilion, Lorain area. The catch in the area is currently dominated by the fish from the record hatch of 2003. News of the tough bite certainly contributed to lower than expected participation with 19 teams in this year’s tournament.

The Huron Tigers “H Club” grilled hot dogs for the anglers prior to the awards presentation at the Huron Boat Basin. Thanks to Bob Hanko from Cranberry Creek Marina for running the scales and Mike Albright from West Marine for assisting with recording results. Steve Noftz from South Shore Marine coordinated the fundraising and volunteers that make the tournament possible. We would like to thank the following for their support: Katman Graphics, The Gull Motel, Ace Hardware, Huron Lagoons Marina, Holiday Harbor Marina, Berardi’s Family Restaurant, Latanick Equipment Inc., Carl Walski’s Boat Ramp, West Marine, Western Basin Sportfishing Association, Huron Boat Basin. Special thanks to South Shore Marine, CONTENDER Sport Fishing Boats, and Rampage Sport Yachts for sponsoring the $1000 Big Fish Payout. Thanks to all the anglers that support the event.
