Day II Competition of the GNWC National Championship Cancelled

By Steve Weisman
GNWC Publicity Director

With small craft advisories out for the entire day on Friday (today), the second day of the Grand National Walleye Cup’s National Championship at Vermilion, OH has been cancelled.

A meeting of all competing teams will be held at Red Clay on the River at 4:30 p.m., at which time a decision will be made on the status of completing the final day of the tournament on Saturday.

“We definitely want to do what’s best for the teams,” said GNWC executive director Bernie Barringer. “With a small craft advisory out for all day today, we definitely won’t have any boats out on the water today. The Coast Guard gives their update later this afternoon, so we will meet with all the teams at 4:30 this afternoon and make our decision for Saturday at that time.”

After Day I of the competition, the team of Greg Yarbrough from Port Clinton, OH and Jeff Seyka from Milford, MI hold the lead with a five-fish limit weight of 35.27 pounds. Their 9.42-pound walleye also puts them in the lead for the Cabela’s Big Fsh Award.

Sitting in second place with a five-fish weight of 20.65 is the team of Matt Davis from Marion, OH and Kelly Buchenroth from Kenton, OH.

Alan Szoke from Grosse Ile, MI and John Szoke from Blomfield Hills, MI with a five-fish weight of 20.44 pounds.

The GNWC National Championship is presented by Skeeter Boats and Yamaha Outboards. Major national sponsors for the GNWC include Lowrance Electronics, YoNet Folding Nets by AMFYOYO, Aqua-VU, The Oxygenaor, Cabela’s and UpNorthOutdoors.com. National Championship boosters are Towtector Shield, MinnKota, Mack’s Lure and the FoodSource Lure Competition.

With that forecast, it looks like a one-day, winner takes all tourney. 8-11' waves Saturday doesn't look good.

It's unfortunate this year for the Vermillion/Huron area, when the first-place team has to run 60 miles to catch a potentially winning basket. It's the weirdest year I have ever seen for walleyes on this end of the lake.

Congrats to the two WBSA teams for their good showings on day one. The second place team and Stedke/Carlson.

I think the WBSA has 12 members entered in total. 4 of them being in the top 10. Way to go Matt Davis / Kelly Buchenroth in 2nd and Robert / Randy Cline in 10th spot! Chuck Hanck is hanging in there in the hopefully not so unlucky 13th spot. Way to go guys.
