I was thinking of investing in a couple of St croix Glass trolling rods. Dose anyone have an opinion on these fishing rods. I was concidering the GT80MH2 8 ft. model for trolling Dipsies and small boards. Also interested to know your favorites if ya don't use these rods. I was also concidering a pair of Diawas but am unsure wheather to go with the 27 or 47 size. I fish on Lake Erie...mostly Western basin but I do fish other areas. I know the 27 is plenty but everyone seems to go with the 47s. I presently use Okumas and like them very much.
Thanks everyone,
Jess

I have 4 of the 8 footers your talking about. Pulled em hard last year in the central basin with all the sizes of dipsy's and jets. . Have no complaints what-so-ever. I also have a set of either 10 or 10 1/2 footer too. Again same deal no problems. Hooked up with a lot of silver bullets (steelies) this past year on em. That's a pretty good test and they all passed with flying colors. By the way I took the longer rods and ran steel line with then too. Just took the tip off and glued on a twili-tip. No probems at all. My rods all have either the 27's or the smaller okuma ( can't remember the # ) reels. Hutch

Jess,
I run the St Croix Pro Glass 7 footers medium action for my planar board rods (big mast & ski boards). They are very popular for board rods among the Lorain Captains. Last I remember they were around $70-$80 a piece. I assume the 8 footers you are looking at are at least that much and maybe more. I'm sure they will do a fine job, but for dipsey rods, you'll be hard pressed to find a better rod than the Okuma 8 or 8 1/2 foot medium action dipsey rods for around $30 a piece. Den has em 888 855 9032 next week after the Cleveland show is over and Fishermans' Wharf in Port Clinton has em too.
Use the money you save on these to get the reels. Diawa 27s are fine for dipseys. In the Okuma reels go with the 30 DX for dipseys and the 20DX should be fine for board rods. If you already have Okumas, I'd advise you to match your stuff as much as possible, or at least for the same application (ie Diawa 27s for dipseys and Okumas for boards or the other way around if you have Okuma 30s.)

Steve,
I presently use Okuma 30 dx reels with 8 ft Okuma rods. I like the rods but I was gonna invest in a pair of higher quallity rods this season. Its usually just me out there so I'm restricted to 2 rods but when I have a guest it will be nice to have the 4. I would match all 4 but I wanted to try a different settup and see if I get a little nicer pair or rods. I rarely have more than 2 people with me (rarely 2 actually) so it will be a rare occasion that I'd have all 4 rods being used in the same application. This is why I'm thinking of trying a new settup.
Thanks,
Jess
